Our lass was made redundant 3 weeks ago and applyed for the dole today.
She starts a new job Mid June but we pay so much tax we thought we'd claim the dole for the 5-6 weeks until she starts again. She had to go to the job centre fill out forms and look for jobs for 2 hours (when she has one already) then to rub insult to injury we're told she cannot claim the first 3 weeks of dole money because it cannot be backdated, is this right?.
Can I refuse to pay tax for 3 weeks if so, lol?

It's right in respect of the legal position, but yes, it's completely wrong in respect of fairness and justice to people who claim under reasonable circumstances. You're damn right - see what happens if you try to tell them they can't backdate a claim for tax ha ha ha! Unfortunately, you can't do ANYTHING about the way these things work, they're pretty much untouchable. Just keep in line and try get the money you're entitled to, to be honest it's reasonable folks like yourself who end up getting screwed and caught up in little loopholes like that, the serial benefit claimants know all the little rules and know exactly how to get as much as possible, and the job centre staff usually aren't daft enough to hassle them either. Shame really. |

you dont get any dole for any period you have redundancy or advance pay for and they do NOT backdate anything thats the rule plus they often take 3 months to sort it out!
thats why you never rely on it for short-term I have always gone for income protection insurance it pays more - quicker but only for 1 year so if your not working past they you have a BIg problem and the dole can then take over.
Sorry you cannot stop paying tax because you doughter cant get dole - legally she is nothing to do with you and you'll just end up with a fine form the tax office. |

Sorry mate they're right . They have had to bring all these measures in because in the past they have been exploited.

She should have claimed immediately her job ended. The only reason they will backdate is if there was extreme circumstances which meant she could not get to the jobcentre to apply. In order for her to be entitled to JSA she must be actively seeking work whether or not she has a job lined up. That's why it's called job seekers allowance. Make sure she does a jobsearch every week or they will stop her money. And anyway she may have a job lined up but I've seen these fall through so many times. |

they are right, i was made redundant and when i tried to make a claim they screwed me over because of paid holiday, you can't win. |

She should have been down at the dole office or is it called job seekers the day after she finished work. Did she mention to them she had a job to go to? if she did then she shouldn't have. She would have had at least 1 week holiday pay given to her when she left work and what about any redundancy payments if she had worked for the same company for 20 years then she would have had a tidy sum so she wouldn't have been penniless. Any way if she has worked for 20 years she must be at least 36 years old so why are you fighting her battles for her at the age? |
