Each individual pays taxes on a tier system. Each tier has a rate (you always hear about "tax rates").
For example, here are the tax rates for a single person:
10%: from $0 to $8,025
15%: from $8,026 to $32,550
25%: from $32,551 to $78,850
28%: from $78,851 to $164,550
33%: from $164,551 to $357,700
35%: $357,701 and above
Companies have similar tiers. Just for argument, we'll say the above tiers are for companies. If they make more than $500K a year (and a lot of them do), then they will be so deep in that highest tax rate they can't help but pay 30%. |

The highest earners in the US pay 35%. Then they pay an additional 1.45% to medicare (higher if you are self-employed), and an additional 6.2% to social security (only on the first $92,000 made, and higher if you are self-employed). They they pay another 2-6% if they live in a state where there is an income tax (most states have one). And you may even pay another 1-3% to you city/county/township. And will even pay another 1-2% for their school board.
The 30% tax rate is correct. Some pay even higher rates than that. And that may not even include state, medicare, social security (they have to match whatever you pay), plus they pay state and federal unemployment taxes (the government calls this insurance, but it is a tax), as well as local taxes. Some states other crazy taxes on certain businesses.

Sure. People who earn high salaries pay more than that.
Others who receive much of their income from dividends and capital gains pay at a lower rate, but that may not last much longer. |

Personal services corporation pay a flat 35% on net income (this is after employees are paid their salaries).

The short answer is yes. The long answer is also yes. Most of us pay about 50% in taxes. We work from January until about May or June to pay all of our taxes. If you are talking about income taxes, there are those who pay that much and more. If most people actually sat down and calculated how much taxes they pay we would probably have a tax revolt on our hands. Just to give you an idea of some of the taxes you pay are as follows: City sales tax, county sales tax, state sales tax, state income tax, federal income tax, social security tax, medicare tax, medicaid tax, property tax, excise tax, fuel tax, franchise and excise tax, personality tax, inventory tax, drivers license tax, automobile tag tax, automobile title tax, continuity tax, water tax, sewer tax, garbage collection tax, and the list goes on and on. |
