chiach147 | Economic Stimulus Payment? |
I am 18 years old and filed my own tax return in February of this year. It was direct deposited and I was expecting to receive my stimulus payment of $300 by May 9th... it never came. If my parents filed me as a dependent on their tax return but not as a child qualifying for child tax credit (since i'm over 17), do I still lose the economic stimulus payment since they filed me as a dependent, or should I still be receiving it? I hope this makes sense. Thanks. |

If your parents claim you as a dependent, you will be ineligible for the rebate, but you may still benefit under the plan.
While the rebate depends on your 2007 status and income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, taxes would be cut in 2008 from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.
So if you have taxable income in 2008, you will see a tax cut when you file in 2009. |

Any person claimed as a dependent is ineligible for the stimulus plan rebates. The fact that you're too old for your parents to get the extra $300 for claiming you is irrelevant. |

If your parents claimed you- you will not get a stimulus check.
Sorry |

If you were claimed as a dependent, you are not eligible for a stimulus payment even though, since you are over 16, your parents won't get extra in their payment either. |

Sorry, but if your parents claimed you, you will get nothing. |

Okay. I had the same problem. My son is 18 and filed his own tax return. He also lives in my house and is a full time student as well as having a job. Therefor, I claimed him as my dependent. I thought he was getting the $300 too. I told him that I'd give it to him if it comes with mine. Come to find out noooo. 18 year olds are basically getting screwed over in the stimulus payment. Nobody gets it. You don't get it because you were claimed on your parents tax return. They don't get either because you are over 17. Yep, if you would have just been a few months younger your parents would get it.
I agree .... it definitely sucks. |

If your parents claimed you on their taxes, you get nothing. THEY get an extra $300. Maybe they'll share. |
