USATOUK | Emergency Tax Question? |
I am moving to the UK in May to start a job. I will not have a national insurance number when I start. So I know I'll be in the emergency tax code for awhile, and I know that eventually I'll get overpayments back. But since I am unmarried and not disabled or anything, will it make a difference in my net income during that time?
Thanks Additional Details I apparently will not have a tax code until a couple months into being employed. So after I get one, do I automatically get refunded? Does the government send me a check or what? |

First let me dispel incorrect notions. Form P60 is given by the employer at the end of the tax year to the employee to show pay and tax. It is not used by or for a new employee.
You will need to establish your residency status before you can get any British Personal Tax Allowance (next year that will be £5435 per annum). You do that by completing form P86, which you can download from hmrc/p86. This should be sent to tax office for your employer. Employer will ask you to sign form P46 to say it is your only or main job. Now employer may have to deduct a straight 20% with code BR before your residency status is agreed. He may however put you on the emergency code. It depends on your circumstances (eg, what country you are from/how long you will be in the UK/etc). The emergency code number deducts approximately the correct amount of tax, but instead of being on a cumulative basis, each week/month is taken in isolation. As you will be starting in May, and our tax year starts on 6th April, you may have a backlog of tax allowance. If you are given the normal cumulative code number, and you get a form P2, and your employer a form P6, this authorises him to make any refund which may be due to you.
There is no longer a married man's tax allowance in the UK, unless you were born before 05/04/1935, or an allowance for the disabled. Some industries attract a union-agreed fixed rate expense in your code, but it is not a large amount. Your employer can tell you if this applies. |

There are lots of guesses in the answers here!
First of all, it's your responsibility to get an NI number and you can do this once you come here. You make an appointment at your local DHSS office and they go through it with you.
You do not need an NI number in order to work in the UK. Under the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996, your employer just needs to see evidence that you are entitled to wrok in the UK and your passport and work permit can be used for this purpose.
Tax and NI ddeductions will commence as soon as you start work, whether or not you have your Ni number by then. Any Ni deductions will be credited to an account in your name and date of birth and be held there until your number comes through.
If you start work on or before 24 May, your employer is allowed to assume you had no UK earnings before you started with them and so will not put you on emergency code. if you start work after that date, you will be on E code, but HMRC will issue a proper code as soon as they get your P86. The refund will be made through your wages, not at the end of the tax year.
You need to make sure you complete a form P46 which your employer will give you and a form P86 from www.hmrc.gov.uk, which you send straight to the tax office.
There is no tax relief for being married or disabled. |

You will be allocated a temporary NI number and you will be paying the highest income tax rate (emergency tax), and normal NI contribution.
Once your NI is issued your overpaid tax will be reimbursed immediately and your tax aligned with your actual then rate, according your total income. |

you CAN'T work LEGALLY in the UK without a national insurance number
this is a different issue to your tax code... when your paperwork and tax code is sorted, the refund will be in your pay packet, if your employer has done their job properly.
butlike i say you can not work legally in the uk without a national insurance number. |

The tax year begins 6th April, so for the weeks up until you start work you will presumably have unused allowances. If you have the basic tax allowance you can earn £100 a week without paying tax, although you would pay national insurance on that. So if you start work 4 weeks after the start of the tax year you will have 4 x £100 = £400 pounds of allowances to come back when they sort out your code - all you need to do is work out what the tax is on those allowances - that is how much to come back in your pay. |

This depends on how much you earn , whether you are normally in full time education , and whether you have any expenses that directly relate to your employ , eg , if you have to buy your own uniform , tools , etc , these are tax deductable |

your employer will sort out your national insurance number.
this has nothing to do with how much tax you will pay. you will be on emergency tax untill the tax off allocate you with a tax code. if you are single you will have a slightly higher tax code to someone who is married earning the same salary.
your tax code is worked out on your gross income, marital status, and where you are living. so once you have your tax code your net will increase alittle |

tax and national insurance are not the same thing, not having a ni number will not effect your tax if when you start employment you fill out a p60 form ( your new employer will have 1 of these ) also you can only apply for a ni number when you have employment and not before, hope this helps |
