Emergency tax?
Hi guys, I have read some of the other Q&A regarding tax codes which helped me quite a bit but not completely. Please can anyone out there can answer my question?

Q1 My previous employers had always used the BR code. Since July this year (06) I have started a permanent job, however, this currenct employer still uses BR tax code as my P45 from the last employer stated so. I have been advised that to fill in a P46 and tick 'this is my only job' etc. So my question is: Once they have provided me with the correct code, will they pay me back the extra tax that I had paid automatically (if there was any)or do I need to fill in some kind of form to request it? What about one of my previous job about 2 years ago? They had used BR code too? How do I claim it back (I did not get a P45 for this job)?

Q2 My cousin has 2 jobs, and her tax code is 503LW1, is that correct?

I will be very very grateful if any of you kind people could offer me any advice/comments. Thank you ever so much! :)

Once your tax code is issued you will get your tax allowance for this financial year only. You may not get a refund but you will pay considerably less until your personal allowance is reached. If your tax code is 503 it means your personal allowance is £5035 for this year. It will be processed on a cumalative basis each month. In September (month 6 ) tax free allowance to date will be half of the above figure. To claim tax for previous years you must write to the tax office. If you don't do this you will not get a refund.

Your cousins tax code is probably correct if one of the part time jobs is BR tax code. It's not possible to assess the total tax due until the end of the fiscal year. The tax office will then base the figures on both employments

Yes, you will get the money back - I was on Emergency Tax for a while - the first thing you should do is speak to your company's accountant if you can, or failing that the Tax Office.

Any over payment of tax will be refunded to youwhen you 'proper' tax code is reassesd. The BR code suggests the revenue think you have 2 jobs (or another soure of income), and is already giving you the tax allowances on that other income.

if you are only working in a single job then you should not be on the BR code (and you have no other source of income) - Try talking to the revenue, or better yet write to them. Your employer should eb able totell you which office actually handles your tax

it helps if you provide your tax number and / or your NI number.

In my experience they do pay your tax back once they have identified your correct code. It will be included in your weekly/monthly salary cheque, or depending on circumstances, refunded to you at the end of the current tax year.

o.k fill out the p46 a.s.a.p then contact the local tax office, about a week later to make sure they have received it from your employer, when on the phone ask them to check your tax records for all the years you not sure about, and ask them if you can have a form sent out to reclaim any owing tax. make sure you put down the dates correctly or they won't check it for you and you will lose it.

any excess tax on emergency tax is yours dont leave it, the government gets enough already.
