I would return it. Even if they made a mistake and the money is in your hands, doesn't mean it's yours. The bookkeeper who made the mistake might get in trouble, too. Just return it and have a clean conscience!

beliz
There mistake or not, you are legally responsible to pay it back. Do you want to risk they taking you to court and ruining your credit report for this.

missis_beki@y7mail.com
unfortunately you legally have to pay it them back
and if you are in the uk your tax record is not correct untill you have paid it back
its a pain i know and i would love to say keep it
i had the same problem with my old employer
if you have already spent it though you can request flexible terms to pay it back

It is probably best you pay back as soon as possible , but if you wanted to be difficult you could send it in monthly instalments

Well because you have pointed it out to them (and I would like to congratulate you for your honesty!) you will have to pay it back. Make sure you ask them for a receipt because if you have been overpaid you may also have had too much tax deducted so you may be due a refund of tax, but you will have to write or phone the tax office to ask.

Well, now that you've called, you pretty much have to send the money back. If you hadn't called, I would say to keep the money. You could still keep the money now, but you risk them trying to force you to pay them back. Honesty is the best policy in this situation.

Unfortunately you will have to pay this back, you are not entitled to the money

WICKERMAN
my old work mate was paid for three months and with bonuses

he was told he had to pay it back, but he refused, and stated it was there mistake

He never paid it back, and told the company to lodge a complaint with his soliciter

They backed down, admitted there mistake and he was 4 grand better off !!
another employee that left, was six months before they twigged that he had left !! only clicked when his name came up for a Christmas Party event !! WHOS THIS ??

Another company loss !!

BRAINS
You should have kept quiet, put the money in a savings account and if they ever found out, just refunded them. Now the 'cats out of the bag' you will have to give it back or they could sue you for it if they so wish.

Sparky
Honesty is the best policy. You've already told them you were over paid and they have asked for it back, what is your problem with that?

Play it by ear...If they chase iit from you then it is best to pay it back.Remember you may need them in the futire for work references and if it is only a small amount is it worth it to get a bad reference..Honesty is always the best policy...

Harly Q
they can claim it back from your next wage.
