Goran J | Filing Status question? |
I got married on July 14th of 2007 but accidentally filed 'single' on my tax returns that year, and so did my wife. Can we get int trouble for that? How much trouble? This was unintentional and we plan to file married this year. How do we fix our mistake? |

You should complete a tax return for 2007 on paper - - - then if you owe, wait until you have that $$ handy, then file the amended return :-).

Don't listen to the people that say that you have to be married 6 months in order to file as married. That is an old urban legend.
You need to amend your returns.
Either both of you need to amend to "Married-Filing Separately" or one of needs to amend to "Married-Filing Jointly" and include both of your income.
You won't get in "trouble" but you could have to send back some of your refunds. You will then get a small bill for the interest back to 4/15/2008. |

You should each file amended returns, or even better file one amended return amending the two to a joint return.
Depending on your incomes, that might or might not result in a change to what you owe, and could go either way - you could owe additional tax, get a refund, or break even. |

Try calling or logging onto the IRS homepage and see the list of frequently asked questions.
I forgot to file Single from Head of Household when my son turned 18.
I found that I had to pay more taxes as a Single person with not deductions.
I have an additonal $5 deducted each pay period in hope sof covering any deficit.
I believe married couples get a tax credit, but be sure to check with an accountant or call IRS to be certain.
Happy filing.
Do not worry, most oversights can be turned to something advantageous................bb

Just go back and file amended returns for yourself for 2007. It isn't that hard. You probably paid more tax than you should have since you were meant to file as married. |

no because you were not married for 6 full months.
Don't worry about it. It will not affect anything.
a lot of husbands and wifes file seperatly to get more back, but some people like me find that filing jointly you get more back. depends on your circumstances. |
