Filing separately or jointly on taxes?
Once I have filed jointly with my husband in previous years, do I always have to file jointly? Can I file separately for the first time in 7 years this year?

Audrey A
You have the choice of filing jointly or separately each year you file. Most couples usually figure their taxes both ways to see which comes out better for them.

romanov1918
You can file separately, but you then have to choose "married, filing separate" as your status. Basically, the taxes end up being the same in the long run.

you should file head of household. if you been separated more than six months you can file head of household and you get my the most on your return

Donald D
yes you can. even if your together . but you should ask your tax pro to be safe.

Yung
yes you can you can file seperately i also heard you guys get a little extra money

DirtyTires.com
you can file together or separate at any time that you want then go back again. The difference is that filing separate you'll be at a higher tax rate. The benefit is when you're not together and one makes much more money than the other.

NateyB
You can file seperately, but usually your tax burden will be greater this way.
