Tania B | First Time Filing Taxes: Please Help!? |
I'd like to go about filing taxes on my own and avoid paying $50-$80 to have some chump at some tax place do it for me. My W2 states that $263.26 is the federal amount withheld and $148.86 is the state amount withheld. I earned near $5k working a part time job, so to my understanding I should recieve the total amount of both federal and state back. I will be filing as an idependent in IL.
Anyways, what's the best way for me to go about filing my federal and state at the lowest cost possible to me? Any good websites or programs I need to know about? All tips will help.
Thanks! |

Most local libraries have all the IRS forms, if you are single with one job, a simple form is 1040EZ and 1040 EZ T, those two are all you need to know. They are very simple to do and mail in. www.irs.gov has free online filing sites that you can check out if you want to do that.............. |

Get Turbo Tax! Since you don't know what you are doing, you need help. You can check out the IRS website to file on line but since you don't know what you are doing, you may need some help that you can't get on-line. I don't know about on-line IL.
DON'T GO TO H&R BLOCK. They will charge you too much and they don't know what they are doing. |

Go to irs.gov and click on 2007 Free File. It will bring up a list of sites that allow you to file for free if your earned less than $52,000. It's very simple and walks you through step by step. Good luck! |

Just go to the library or post office and get a 1040EZ form, get a coulple in case of errors, and the instruction booklet, you are not itemizing and have overpaid taxes on a small income so you will be refunded the excessive amount. It is very simple and the instructions are easy to follow. Good luck! |

If that's all of your income, and you're single with no dependents, then you shouldn't even need something like TurboTax. Download form 1040-EZ from irs.gov and fill it out - just do it one line at a time and follow the directions.
If your state has an income tax, you should be able to find the forms and instructions for that on your state website.
Depending on the state, you might or might not get all your state withholding back . You should, for federal. |

Fill out the 1040EZ as best you can. It's easy, follow the instructions in the book. Use the Earned Income Credit (EIC), and you should probably get over $500.00 back.
Almost to the very bottom of the form is a box to check if you want the IRS to help with your tax form. Check the box yes. They won't charge you or rip you off, they're just there to make sure you got it OK. But be sure to fill it out the form anyway.
I'm not sure about the state taxes. That depends on the state you are in. My state (Washington) takes no taxes from our checks. |

I don't know enough about your individual income tax situation to give you the kind of help you need. I agree with the other posters-buy the basic Turbo Tax (with state included) and prepare the return yourself. Since your income is low, you may be entitled to the earned income credit, but as I said, I don't know the specifics of your tax situation. BTW, the Illinois return is straightforward and you can file online, but you need to have the federal prepared first before you can do the state.
Good luck! |

Go to the irs site and click on 2007 free file.
They link you to sites where you can efile free because you earn less than $52000 a year.
I choose TaxAct and you do have to fill in the appropriate ##s but they prompt you with all the questions.
And it is FREE !
good luck
