First time tax payer, help!?
I am a recent college grad and have to file my taxes for the first time (my parents previously claimed me). I was a student for 1/2 the year (and working part time), and then fully employed for the other half. Also, I lived in OH for 1/2 the year and CA for the other. My parents don't care if I claim me or they do, which would be the way I get money back? I feel stupid I am meeting with a tax preparer and I don't even know if I should claim myself or not!!!!

ANY ADVICE, AT ALL, WOULD BE GREAT!!!!!
Additional Details
I made a fair amount (more than $20,000) so far in this job, and pay my bills, including rent (but not my car or insurance, thanks mom and dad). If that changes anything.

Claim yourself, you will get much more money. You're parent's can't claim you unless they paid 51% or more of your total expenses for the year.

Plus, you are going to have to file state returns for the multiple states you earned income in. You'll only have to file one federal.

If you moved for work, or incurred any expenses in finding your job, you will be able to deduct those expenses as well, including mileage.

Your tax preparer should know all the loopholes to getting you your max tax amount back (Claim yourself and you could get more money back, plus you may qualify for EIC also).

OK, you are a dependent if someone has provided more than 50% of your total support from all sources. It's not a "pick and choose" kind of thing. If your parents CAN claim you you CANNOT, no matter if they don't. It's very important to read the lines on the tax return. It's unlikely that you need to pay a tax preparer just to file an EZ return. If you feel computer savvy go to www.irs.gov and click on "Freefile" then choose a company that offers free electronic filing online. Just read every question "Literally" and you'll be fine!

If you are meeting with the tax preparer, just ask him or her. Trust me, they've heard every question in the book! Whether or not to claim yourself is a tricky one. Do you pay your own insurance? Have you made a lot of money, or just a little? What state you live in doesn't matter much for federal taxes, but be sure and have your info straight when preparing your state taxes. Relax, and ask all the questions you want of the preparer. It's what you're paying for, right?

?
You would get the money if you claimed. It would make sense if you've worked already for half the year to claim for yourself. If you are living at your parent's place and they're being easy on you for room and board make sure and give them their due!!!

Take your own deduction. Don't let them have it. File state returns in the two state if you made money in both. Federal - Try the 1040EZ form, as it takes about 5 minutes to fill out.

Speaking to your campus careers advisor may be of some help. The Taxation office is only there to get what they can from you, so as it will be your first time get as much information for an independant body prior to filling in the forms. It does cost to have someone do it for you but you are more likely to get what you are entitiled to. Ask your parents if it is possible, they would have been doing it for year

If you were a full time student for more than five months out of the year, then your parents have every right to claim you. Especially if they paid for your schooling. In fact, if you were a full time student and they don't claim you, then you cannot claim yourself and the exemption is lost. Your best bet is both you and your parents go into an H & R Block, take both sets of paperwork and have them do it. They will compare and tell you both the best way to file at no additional charge.

Better off using a service like H&R block the first time. Then you can go over your taxes and get an idea on what to do next year.

use TurboTax..it's quick and easy and plus you'll get your return within 2 weeks.
