I'm a volunteer w/VITA; check to see if there is a VITA site near you. They can do your taxes w/o charge. With a child and depending on the age of your child and your filing status, you may be eligible for the Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit and Day Care Credit. I would hate to see you not get all of the money back from the government that you can.

Description from the IRS site:
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $39,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing. To locate the nearest VITA site, call 1-800-829-1040.

Chances are that your taxes will be extremely simple. Just do it with a paper form and a calculator and don't spend a dime (well, you still have to pay for postage).

taxes arnt that hard to do if you dont have to itemize your deductions ,,, but H&R block is ok along with jackson hewit ... having one of them do it for you means you have help if there is an audit.... but if your not deducting yones of things then a 1040 form can be pickud up at the post office ... or like someone else said irs.gov for online fileing... remeber to check out earned income credit and child tax credits ... you can get substantial returns with those credits .... H&R block and jackson hewitt can also do rapid refunds for you so you can collect your money faster ... for a fee of course

Do it yourself - not hard at all (compared to high school).

www.IRS.GOV
FORMS, SCHEDULES AND INSTRUCTIONS - PLUS search section to ask questions.

to file free
www.irs.gov - and click on FREE Filing - if your line 38 of the 1040 is under $52,000 - and they ask you the questions.
So do the taxes in rought draft first, and then try the free filing.
They have the place where you may save it and come back later and finish it.

It's not that difficult and you will learn so much.
If you find you don't like doing it, you may get any tax program (walmart has lots), and they ask the same questions. - pretty easy.

GOD bless America, always.

Taxact.com has an online form that is free for federal and under $13.00 for state which includes e-filing.

I've been doing my own taxes since I was 16 years old. I worked for H&R block at one time as well.

Do your own. The software is cheap and easy as long as you can read and answer questions. A 'professional" can't show you anymore deductions than what you can find on your own using tax software. I've used Taxcut and Turbotax. They are equally easy to use and under $20.00.

if you will not be itemizing then do it yourself.
if you make under 50k you can file for free by going to irs.gov and hitting the link for free file.
