You should be able to file regular 1040. If you have over $10,700 (standard married filing jointly deduction) in mortgage interest, property taxes, state taxes, medical expenses over 7.5% of your salary, donations as a total you need schedule A, otherwise you do not. You need Schedule B if you have over $1500 in interest or common dividends. You can try itemizing on a Schedule A to see if it benefits you. This year it does not benefit our family since we have very low property taxes and low mortgage interest (thank goodness!) |

If you own a home, 1040 (long form).
If you do not own a home, the 1040A should suffice. The $400 in expenses won't help you any. |

Sounds like a 1040 standard. Three forms 1040EZ, 1040A then 1040. Filing Schedule A with 1040 souds like your deal. |

It sounds like you probably need the long form because I'm assuming that you had some moving expenses getting up to Alaska (unless the military picked up all of the costs of setting up the household.) |

Use a 1040A.
Depending on your financial status, you may qualify for EIC. Make sure you read up on that. |

1040A is plenty. |

Unless you itemize (typically folks who own a home and/or have other substantial itemized deductions...none of which I see here) the Form 1040A should do it this year.
As a military family, you may want to try your free VITA tax assistance office on the nearest base/post. They can answer your questions, file your taxes -- even electronically, and are generally very familiar with the unique rules concerning military pay and benefits, combat pay, foreign income, etc. They're often run out of the JAG/SJA office.
Good luck and thanks for your service! |

I just wanted to add the point to make sure that you have gotten a social security number for the baby. Some people don't realize they need that to file taxes. |
