because you have a labour party in power, who don't believe in people keeping much of the money they earn, they believe they know best how to apportion it out, socialist policies, or at least Nu Labour have brought us to our knees.

First, national insurance is 11% not 15%.
Second, you get a personal allowance of £6035 before you pay tax and about £5200 before you pay NI, so the average rate over the whole salary is less than 20% + 11%.
Third, VAT is not charged on essentials such as food and children's clothing.
Fourth, the basic rate of income tax has been dropping steadily over the last 30+ years. It was 33% around 1980.

We don't pay anywhere near 65p in the pound as tax, and I don't think the rates have changed significantly over the last 11 years.

I don't have the source to hand, but I think the official average total tax paid is about 50p in every pound. As I remember we have one of, if not the, lowest rates in Europe. The USA is less than us, but there they have people who can't afford basic medical treatment and normal people who have to rely on food parcels if they are made redundant. I know where I'd rather live.

This is because Britain in a welfare state that supports the unemployed, unemployable, sick and elderly. The elderly have paid taxes for decades and are therefore entitled to state support/ pension. It should probably do more to get the unemployed & unemployable back to work again, so the burden on hard working families is lessened substantially. Some one needs to pay for all this and this burden falls on the shoulders of the employed and hard working.

Because any Labour Government thinks any assets privately owned is an encroachment on their entitlements. Ministers want the populace state owned and controlled. They think the answer to any problem is to throw money at it, but as they don't have the foggiest on administration, the money all goes into black holes, never to be seen or heard of again.

What is your source for this claim? Before we all start debating it, pehaps you could show some evidence that what you stating is true.

Updated: The basic rate of income tax was reduced by the current government. So was VAT, from 17.5 to 15%. National Insurance has gone up slightly. Sorry, but I don't think you've come close to proving the claim that tax used to be a lot less 11 years ago.
