Forgot to report 6 months worth of rent on the 2007 taxes?
It totally slipped my mind now that im in my b/f's home. I paid $465 a month for 6 months and never reported that on my taxes. I claim 6 on my checks and had to pay in to Federal about 600.00. What is the worst that could happen...or what do I need to do?
Also...because i had to pay in and wasnt my year to claim my son what can i expect with the stimulus check?
Additional Details
My last tax preparer always put my rent paid on my tax forms. I now have a new one and it wasnt mentioned.

OK, everyone is correctly telling you that there's no way to include the amount of rent you pay on your federal tax return -- however, there are some states that allow you to take a percentage of your rent as a deduction from your *state* income tax, so maybe that's what you've done in previous years?

Nothing will happen to you if you don't report it, because the only difference it would make would be to increase your state refund slightly -- they're not going to come chasing after you to give you more money; they'd only chase you if you owed *them* more. So you can either just forget about it, or file an amended state return. It's up to you. The amount of money won't be that much.

If you didn't claim your child as your dependent on your 2007 tax return, you don't get the additional $300 rebate for him. That will go to whoever did get to claim him.

Rent can't be claimed on your federal return.

There are no deductions for rent unless you are running a business from your apartment. If you had a tax liability you can expect to get between $300 and $600.

Jenn
You don't report rent unless you are the landlord...

Are you in the US? Rent you pay isn't claimed on a federal return, only rent you GET if you rent out a property.

If it wasn't your year to claim your son on your tax return, you won't get any stimulus money for him. You'll get between $300 and $600 for yourself - if you paid at least $600 for federal income tax you would get that much.

You don't claim rent on your taxes so that is irrelevant. You should get $600 for the stimulus check and the dad should get the $300 for the son.

What state requires the I include rent paid? I have never hear of that. And, I do income taxes!

you better get a new tax preparer - that last guy has no idea what he is doing - rent you pay is not deductible

Sue Ellie
easy, file an amended and file what was left off the original return.

did you make this $$ from renting out to someone or did you pay this rent for your own living space? Rent from someone is income to you, rent you paid for your own living quarters is money thrown out the window. Not allowed on Federal
