Get taxes done or do our own?
I have done Turbo Tax in the past but for the last few years we've been going to get our taxes done, like at H&R Block. The price difference is pretty big and I'm not sure if it's worth it to go someone for our taxes. Only my husband works, making about 80K, we have one small child, bought a house and sold a house this year, he's a cop, that's all I can think of as far as important info. What should we do?

If you're not comfortable of doing your taxes this year due to the sale of the house etc., you better off seeing a tax professional. It is true that H&R Block have some quick trained tax preparers, but they also do have experienced tax professionals as well. House selling and buying is not terribly complicated, but you need know certain things. If you have a gain from the sale of your main home, you may qualify to exclude all or part of that gain from your income!IRS Publication 523 should help you a lot , if you have a time to read and do a little research, so that you can do your taxes on your own. Your tax software also should help you.

Otherwise you probably can see a tax professional. Remember, if you see a tax professional who seems not knowledgeable enough to answer your questions, you should walk away and find someone confident enough to know what the heck he/she will do to prepare your taxes. One other thing is, if you go to the H& R Block, probably their service will come with some sort of service guarantee that at least will help you to assist in case of an IRS audit. If you do your taxes on your own & examined by the IRS, you're on your own and probably have to hire a CPA, Tax Attorney or an Enrolled Agent. Good Luck.

I use H & R Block online and do them myself for our family. They walk you through every step of the way so it is not hard at all and is a lot cheaper than going to a tax preparer! Unless you have a complicated return, which it sounds like you do not, I don't know why you could not just file them yourself online. :)

if your husband makes 80 k isnt it worht hiring someone to do the taxes

I used to get my taxes done by professional accountants for years. But I noticed as I sat there, they were consulting books that the Government had mailed to me (and all taxpayers), and which, anyway, I could pick free at any post office. In other words the accountants were not doing anything I could not do myself. And I was paying them. I used to think the accountants know laws to save me money, laws which I couldn't know for myself. Rubbish! (That's why some accountants want you to go home and let them fill out the forms when you are not there to see that they use the same books you have.)
So, I started doing my own taxes. For the first two years, it was rough because the Government must have mischievous monkeys who devise the rules. But I kept at it. Now, I can finish the process within 3 hours, and I don't pay anybody. Sometimes I have made mistakes, but I find that if you make an honest mistake, the (monkey-hiring) Government just corrects it and I pay the difference. It's still worth it to not pay somebody else.
I have found that since my situation has remained the same, more or less throughout the years, it got easier to fill out the forms. Try it. YOU WILL SAVE MONEY.

Turbo tax was really easy for me and I had bought a house & I had to do it for the first time on my taxes last year. My boyfriend always went to H & R block and then one year I did them for him on turbo tax and he got back about the same as the previous year. I would use turbo tax if I were you.

Do your own.. you've done it in the past...all you need are W-2's, mortgage interest statements etc. Just follow the directions and read the questions.

H & R block and others of their ilk can charge you a fortune..legally. Even if you do your own it still cheaper than paying $250 - $300 for 1040, schedulue A and other schedules.

If I am not mistaken you are charged per form with these preparers. I usally buy the product and do mine, my family and friends with simple forms.

Happy tax season!!!

Go to taxact.com and get their free version of their software. (If you want "deluxe" version which imports your return from 2007 next year, you can pay $12.95 for that). It has a step by step "interview" that walks you through transactions, and it will even ask you if you bought or sold a house this year. It's very straightforward, and I agree with the other respondents - you most likely can do it yourselves, and take yourselves out to dinner on what you've saved.

Do what you are comfortable with. Most people are capable of doing just as good of job on their taxes as the people at H&R Block and their two weekend quickie training on tax law.
