Got an email from the IRS, how do I know it's legitimate?
The email says I'm entitled to a refund and then wants me to click on this link: http://www.bertorotta.it/site/bertorotta.php

This looks like a spoofing attempt to me, does anyone know if this is really the IRS, and if it isn't I'd like to know who I can forward this to at the IRS to let them know.
Additional Details
Thanks for the quick response quys:

Does anyone know who I could forward the email to at the IRS so they are aware of the spoofing attempt?

I tried searching on their site but didn't get any good results. Not too surprised of course, giant government bureaucracies rarely make anything quick and easy.

Go to the IRS web site www.irs.gov and on the main page click the link "Warning on Scam E-Mails."
This is from the IRS web site:

"IRS Warns Taxpayers of New E-mail Scams

Updated Sept. 19, 2007 — Another recent e-mail scam tells taxpayers that the IRS has calculated their "fiscal activity" and that they are eligible to receive a tax refund of a certain amount. Taxpayers receive a page of, or are sent to, a Web site (titled "Get Your Tax Refund!") that copies the appearance of the genuine "Where's My Refund?" interactive page on the genuine IRS Web site. Like the real "Where's My Refund?" page, taxpayers are asked to enter their SSNs and filing status. However, the phony Web page asks taxpayers to enter their credit card account numbers instead of the exact amount of refund as shown on their tax return, as the real "Where's My Refund?" page does. Moreover, the IRS does not send e-mails to taxpayers to advise them of refunds or to request financial information."

Do not respond, do not even click on the link

The IRS does not notify people by email concerning refunds.

It is a scam! Call the IRS yourself and ask them if this is correct. You will get your answer.

Don't get trapped!

It's NOT legit, it's a scam. See the IRS website http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=170894,00.html

It is NOT legit.

First off, the IRS will NEVER e-mail you! They don't ask for your e-mail address on your tax return and therefore they do NOT know what it is.

Even if they did e-mail you, they would NEVER have you click on a link in a foreign country. That link is for a domain registered in Italy.

It is not from the IRS. They prefer to contact you by mail. Also... the IRS would be .gov and have IRS in the url.

No need to forward to them.

I would not trust something that is in e-mail form. To be safe, why not call the IRS directly. At least this way, you know you will be speaking with a legit representative.

setashort55
I am guessing this is most likely SPAM and can be dangerous to you.
Heres some things to ask yourself:
Did I ever give the IRS my email address?
Most Goverment Websites end in .gov not .it or .com
Does the email ask me to give out any personal information?

Search yahoo for IRS and look for contact information and ask them what to do?

I doubt that its really from the IRS they usually send you a letter in the mail. That's how I have been notified in the past about a refund, its probably spam mail. You can always check out that website on the Better Business Bureau. www.bbb.org
