I'll try and be as specific as possible. I filed my tax return and got back $400. I am from Britain on a year working visa in Toronto. My net income was 23,709. Total tax deducted was 2,933. I paid $11,071 in rent for the year. (Rent was the only receipts I was enclosing as I didn't buy monthly TTC passes). However, I still thought I should have gotten back considerably more. I have a friend who paid less tax, much less rent and only worked 6 months and got back 3 times more than me... If anybody could give me any help I would really appreciate it. Also am I better going to a tax specialist to try and sort it out??

A $400 refund sounds right to me. My calculations are that tax on $23,709 of income in Ontario with standard CPP and EI deductions is $2675. That would give you a $258 refund from $2933 of deducted tax. So if you got $400, you're doing well.
The mistake you are making is that rent is not deductible on Canadian returns. I have no idea whether it's deductible in Britain, but it's not here.
So your friend paid less tax, but how much income did he make? The first $13,000 of income is tax free in Canada, so it's entirely possible he got back all of the tax he paid if that was all he earned. |
