There are several possible explanations as to why your refund was different from the amount on the return prepared.
You should return to that office and have them review your return. Bring any correspondence you may have received.
The tax office should be able to tell you if there were any FMS offsets to your state refund. The offsets could be for back state (any state) or federal taxes, child support, student loans, and a few other types of government payments. If you have offsets, the tax office can give you the FMS number to call for more information.
If you had your tax preparation charges taken from your refund, it could be that the bank took some of your refund to satisfy a prior bank debt. The tax office can direct you how to track that down.
It could also be that the state took some of your refund. You would have to contact the state office of revenue to find out about that.
Finally, it could be an error of the tax preparer. If the reduction in refund is due to preparer error, at least they should refund the tax preparation charges for the state return. The preparer is not responsible to pay your taxes, and there is no penalty or interest to refund to you. |

If there was a mistake on your return, you can amend it. But if what you got was what you were supposed to get, and they just told you wrong or did something wrong on your return and the state caught it and corrected it, then there's nothing to be done, and wouldn't be even if you HAD purchased their extra guarantee. |

it was my understanding that if H&R made the mistake, they would pay any penatly associated with it. You must have proof they made a mistake, and then make an appointment to go see them. |

If you have to pay any interest or penalties because H & R mess up then they should pay for it. All returns completed by H & R block come with that guarantee regardless if you have purchased a Peace of Mind. Peace of Mind comes into play if you have to pay additional taxes up to $5,000. |

You might return to them and find out why, what they did wrong. |

The state should send you a letter explaining the difference.
Either there was a mistake made or the state kept some of your money to offset something else (ie. taxes, tickets, fees, fines, library fees, etc.) |

Yes, I do know-- take it to a tax preparer that knows what they're doing. I got skeerewed back in the late 70's. H&R Crock claimed that I owed over $1300, and I had already paid in about $1000. Now that doesn't sound like much, but when I made only about $7500, that's a rip-off. They wouldn't allow me to deduct my truck expenses (I'm a carpenter, working then for my father), claiming that I had to own SEVERAL trucks to qualify for depreciating it. There were a couple of other things, but I think you get the point. I will NEVER, EVER set foot in H&R Block again. I got a local woman who does finance, payroll and taxes, and I've been VERY happy with her. Just get yourself someone else to re-do 'em. |
