Companies can require you to have a checking account for payroll. direct deposit is the safest, easiest and most convenient way for them to pay the employees. |

So they only do direct deposit, not paper checks. It's unusual, but legal. They are the employer, so they get to make the rules. You are the employee - you don't
If they do fire you at the end of the month though, they'd still have to pay you for the time you worked. |

Sounds like they only do direct deposit instead of handing out paychecks.
I don't think it's illegal for them to stipulate that. Besides, most people who have jobs also have checking accounts. And if you get a checking account, you can get a debit card. |

Yes, they can do it. If you have a problem getting a regular checking account, most banks offer special accounts specifically for the purpose of receiving a payroll direct deposit. They do charge a fee for this, but it's far better than being unemployed! |

Absolutely. If you want to work for them, you have to follow their rules as long as its not illegal. |

Of course it's legal. The more important question is whether it's allowed by your contract. It might not be, but proving that would be considerably more expensive and troublesome than getting a checking account, especially if your contract is oral.
You also might see if a savings account would work just as well and be cheaper. There is no rational basis for your employer to prefer depositing into a checking account, rather than a savings account. The worker bees in HR probably just say "checking account" because that's what they're used to saying. |
