HELP Tax fraud question?
Me and my friend went to go get our taxes done, and our preparer put me as my friends dependent, cause she said we would get more money back, she said it was legal, but listed me as his son or brother (without us knowing, and i'm older than he is), and we are not related will this fall under tax fraud and is there anything i can do about this, like a amendment? Is it best to contact the IRS or try to let it go without getting caught, what are the odds of us getting caught, i mean we're only dealing with a couple thosand dollars, nothing major.

I can't believe how everybody is buying into your "Scam" so you can knock down the good name of Jackson Hewitt. My bet is that you are a tax preparer and you lost business to them last year and this year. How foolish can people be to believe this ridiculous story. Give me a break.

This is fraud and you can go to prison. Choose a new accountant or live the life of a liar and tax cheat. If you believe cheating is appropriate, how will you ever justify obeying any law to your children, friends, family, or your god?

You need to amend your tax return for this year. I do taxes during the season and what your preparer did was fraudulent. You need to go back, request to speak to the office manager or get a number to call the corporate number and explain what happened. Someone needs to reeducate this person to what is legal and whats not legal. Unfortunately since you signed off on the return you are ultimately liable so it's extremely important that you amend it asap. The company may or may not do it for free due to their employee putting information into the return that you were not aware of. If you get a refund check before you can amend your return do NOT spend any of the money. In fact, don't even cash the check until after the amendment is filed.

I would not pay the preparer for doing this return and I certainly would not sign it. IRS has social security records which include birth dates for all and death dates for those who have checked out. If you try to claim a deduction for your child who is older than you it will be obvious.

OMG, yes it's tax fraud! Where in the world did you find this poor excuse for a tax preparer? NO IT'S NOT LEGAL!!!! And don't just let it go - you can be in serious trouble - and if you got an extra couple thousand dollars from it, the preparer probably claimed EIC as part of this mess, and that's one place the IRS looks at closely since they are aware it's a place where a lot of fraudulent claims are made.

Take your tax papers, and a copy of the return that was filed, to a legitimate preparer, and have them file an amended return. The phony refund might get sent to you, since those can go out before detailed checking is done, but you're going to have to pay it back with the amended return.

Yes it is tax fraud, did the preparer sign as such on your returns?? She may also be up for charges. How to fix it if it's already gone off to the IRS, call a lawyer now.

You won't go to prison, but your friend will be barred from claiming EIC for 10 years. And if the IRS thinks you agree to this scheme (especially if your income is more than $3400 and/or you don't live with him), they'll ban you too.

Your friend HAS to amend his taxes and remove you as a dependent and pay the money back. NOW. A couple of thousand dollars IS major. Add in penalties and interest, he could end up paying twice as much back.

Plus as soon as the IRS notices even one bogus return prepared by this person, the will AUDIT everyone of them. YOU WILL GET CAUGHT.

When you knew in your heart that this was wrong, you should have walked right then and there.
This is major and YES it is tax fraud.
Sounds like your having trouble dealing with it, so find someone reputable and file an amended return for that year and report everything as it should be...

Learn the lesson and move on.

Check out this from the IRS's website

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=134094,00.html

Please get this refund amended.
Better you let them know then they find out, and they will find out because a FLAG will be raised when you change your filing status next year so then they will look and see for the past three years your returns were all different.
Why take the risk? In additon to jail time, you might have to pay HUGE fines
that will make your return look like bubble gum money

HMMMM - can't see anywhere on his question that mentions a tax preparer - so, I am assuming the "tax preparer" was his own self!
