Here is the page from the IRS site. I would copy and paste but it is a bit long.....
http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=98846,00.html
Also per IRS:
Estimated tax not required
You do not have to pay estimated tax for 2008 if you meet all three of the following conditions.
You have no tax liability for 2007
You were a US citizen or resident for the whole year
Your 2007 tax year covered a 12 month period
You had no tax liability for 2007 if your total tax was zero or you did not have to file an income tax return.
And this:
How To Figure Estimated Tax
To figure your estimated tax, you must figure your expected adjusted gross income, taxable income, taxes, deductions, and credits for the year.
When figuring your 2008 estimated tax, it may be helpful to use your income, deductions, and credits for 2007 as a starting point. Use your 2007 federal tax return as a guide. You can use Form 1040-ES (PDF) to figure your estimated tax. |

You need to calculate your taxes - what you think you will owe for the tax year- and then send them 1/4 of that every quarter. I have had to do quarterly estimated taxes some years and I just cut them a check in late December. |

You can get all of the charts for your quarterly Tax Payments (notice I said payments) which include federal income tax, social security, medicaid, and also any state and city income taxes on the Internet, just google whichever one you want to do first.
Yes there are penalties if you are late with your payments.
Don't forget to get your Federal and State tax ID numbers. You have to have these to do contract work. |

You should probably consult an accountant for this. My husband did contract work (networking) for a year or so and we didn't have to do that though?? |

Estimate what you will make that year and what tax bracket that will put you in, and go from there. If you under pay, you'll also owe a penalty. Better to overpay by as little as possible. |
