yep, you normally have to wait for the end of the tax year though. keep a record of how much youre owed and keep on at them till you get the right amount back.

Everyone who has overpaid tax gets it refunded eventually, but you can speed up the process by making a claim yourself.
But remember, its better for you to owe the taxman, than for the taxman to owe you - that way, you are more in control.
Mark - oh yes, and the other classic is 'because everyone I know gets one'

Regularly. I usually get one if i have several temporary jobs in one year, as the P45s are delayed in moving from one employer to another. I get a cheque sent automatically in the September following the April tax year-end.
It does help if you know what is available to claim in tax reliefs and expenses though.

Personal taxation and payroll is my vocation, so if you need any specific advice IM me.

Apparently the onus is on you to check if you are due a tax refund.

I got around 1000 pounds back from the Inland Revenue. I used:

Who basically did all the work.

yes last year -- but had to fill inloads of forms 1st. plus i had to claim to see if they owed me anything i never just got it in pay- they owed me £250!

A few years ago my dad got over £9,000 back. He hadn't sent a tax return back six years earlier and so his tax code was way out.

Although I have worked for HMRC (formerly Inland Revenue) for two decades, it didn't cross his mind to mention this for almost 6 years.

Had he left it two months later before saying anything, the refund would have been reduced by over £2,000 because of the time limits.

On the flip side, I once saw a man in the tax office who came in asking for a refund. When I asked why he thought he was due one, he said "because I haven't had one for a while".
