Has anybody heard about some tax break everyone is suppose to get?
I been hearing a lot of people talking about how everyone is suppose to get like 200.00 dollars or some lump some of money from the government for the gas prices being so high and that we are suppose to be getting it within the next couple of months. I've heard lots of people talking about it and I was curious if it was true and if so how much and when cus I could always use the extra money! Thanks...

The amount hasn't been announced yet, and it would only go to people who have worked and payed into the tax system. It's not just because of fuel costs...it's because the economy has gone stagnant. They want us to spend the money out in stores, buying new items...but personally, I'm not so sure people will do that. Most of us have debts to pay off and will probably use that money to keep afloat rather than to buy a new wardrobe. They did this once before, but next year...you have to claim that money as income. The government is going to get theirs back out of it no matter what.

Under the terms of the tentative agreement between the White House and Congressional Democrats, individual taxpayers would get up to $600 in rebates, working couples $1,200 and those with children an additional $300 per child under the agreement. Families who make at least $3,000 but don't pay taxes would get $300 rebates.

Nothing has passed Congress yet, so everything is subject to change.

Bush is gonna talk about it tonight on the state of the union address.

SolarFanatic
Listen to the State of the Union speech tonight.

By the way, it's a rebate, no a tax cut. Chances are you'll have to pay tax on it as income next year. They estimate the checks will go out in May - light years from now.

If you ask me, it's a payoff. Both parties want us to have a "warm" feeling about them as we go into the election season.

If they really wanted to stimulate the economy (as they say) they would immediately cut payroll taxes in half temporarily.

datsleather
It is true but still on the table right now if it passes then the checks are going out in June but next year you'll have to pay taxes on it ( it is to put money in the economy)

Babygirl
Individuals who pay taxes and make less than 75,000/yr are supposed to get $600.

I read $600 and also that it was only for those making more than $30,000 per year. I hope that last bit is wrong. Where are they going to get the money? We pay it back to china later? Dick Cheney's Oil Companies are giving the US more in taxes?

dhallkb
It is a tax rebate that is part of an economic stimulus package the goverment is trying to get passed. If passed (at this point) people who make under $75k/year would get $600 back as a rebate. Couples making under $150k get $1200 and an additional $300 per child. There are people who are trying to get it ammended to include extended unemployment benefits and rebates for Seniors on social security. This could possibly delay any possible rebate from being approved and would lower the rebate amount...but something is coming (crossing my fingers)

edit:
the child rebate is whether or not you are married...so under this plan a single mom of two who make $55k/yr would get back $1200 as an example...

First you have to be employed, and the government is sending it out to try and stimulate the economy. You also have have made over 3,000 dollars and paid taxes on it to be eligible.

It will be voted on on Feb 6th. For a single person making 75,000 or less or a couple making $150,000 or less the refund will be $300 for a single or $600 for the couple. You will get the refund only if you have filed your taxes. Refunds will be mailed sometime between May and July.

tma361
are you talking about the rebate? its 50 dollars to every thousand you made

single people $600
married: $1200

w/ kids: $300 dollars for each

the senate still has to approve but if all goes well around May the checks will start to be issued.

leonard s
well it has nothing to do with gas prices. it has to do with stimulating the economy and has not been passed by congress yet.if it is, it will be a tax rebate from your 2008 tax refund given sometime in April or may this year.
