Because hubby and I are self employed and they give us our tax credit on what they think we will make next year based on what we made this year, we got hit pretty hard. We made a rubbish profit a couple of years ago so last year they gave us some money. We then made a good profit last year and because we did they demanded all the money back that they had given us. Because this year's is based on the good profit we made last year, we get nothing. So we are paying it all back in monthly installments.
If we make a rubbish profit this year, then theoretically they owe me for what they haven't given me plus what they assume I will make next year. But I daren't spend it in case they demand it all back the year after!!
It's all so complicated and a totally stupid system, especially for the self employed. |

Yes I had an overpayment and it was claimed back by reducing future payments.
What I can't understand is why an overpayment was made as they were given the correct info - I suppose thats civil servants for you. |

you only have to pay it back if you were born in this country , otherwise if you are a asylum seeker or immigrant you can keep it it is too much hard work for the inland revenue to deal with just make out you cant speak English and you might be lucky |

Yeah we got over paid and i agree with Chris B, why did we get over paid, they were given all the correct information!! Its unfair on struggling families. Our payments got stoppped until we paid back what we owed. |

yes we did and we appealed the claim and we won and did not have to pay it back but it took a long time and hard work |

yes every year, i have even told them i don't want the money as they can't even get the amount right, which is based on your previous years earnings, which they have all the info on, my best line when i ring them each year, is to say anyone else co*king up so much would be sacked, but guess what, they probaly get promotion. |

It must be a record,they don't usually give anything away and yes you can bet your bottom dollar you will have to pay it back.Don't tell them about it though,just in-case.Good luck. |

Yes they take back over payments originally they stopped my money for 5 months !! And now they are still taking the money back each time they do the sums so far there is now £245 left owing to them as my son will probably leave college this summer I wait with excitement the huge bill I am sure I will get from them wanting the rest back !! |

Had an overpayment last year because i change jobs which i had a bonus at the end of the year. This was working tax credits which we relied on to make ends meet, now we have had our credits stoppped for one year until they can asses what bonus i get this year.. No help whatsoever, where do we get the xtras until that time? |

Yes i too was overpayed Tax Credit and didnt know untill i saw that my money was less than usually. When i asked why this was so i was told they had overpayed me which was no fault of my own. I had to pay back all the money back. This has happened to me on more than one occasion so be aware. |

Hi I had an overpayment, a year ago, they were taking £200.00 mth off me as a single parent! It was a nightmare but i spoke to CAB and got appeal forms from them, as if you can prove that it was there mistake you should not have to pay it back. I believe that they are trying to stop this from happening now by increasing the amount of income you can earn over what you expected to £30,000.00 pa. However for all you guys blaming the Civil Servants for the cock ups I can assure you that it is actually the computer system that makes the mistakes. |
