There's a moratorium on this at the moment.
Wait until July.

Yes, I know a couple of people. My mam was one of them. She went through a company and had to pay like £600 to the
m, but she got about £2000 back so it was worth it. If you do a google search for 'claiming back bank charges' there's lots that come up that'll help you claim them all back.

Those charges are penalty charges. If you maintain your account properly you would not be charged. In you case try to ask your banker to waive that charge.

Yes, I've done it for myself and a friend.

Bank charges should now have dropped down to around GBP12-15. If they are charging you at that level it is unlikely that you will recuperate your charges.

The jury is still out on the OFT test case, and the Financial Ombudsman has been asked to put complaints on hold in the interim (see first link). This, however, doesn't stop you complaining to the Nationwide directly. Use the sample letters that appear at the Daily Mail's (Thisismoney.co.uk) website (second link below).

By the way, if you need to get hold of historical banking details DON'T just ask for them as banks have been known to charge per statement provided. Write to them and invoke your rights under the Data Protection Act to get copies of information that they hold on you as the most they can charge you for everything is GBP10.00 (as opposed to say GBP8.00 per statement!).

I wrote to my bank a few years ago and managed to claim back a few hundred pounds. I also managed to help around 10 friends get money back without paying a company to do it. Go to http://www.bankcharges.info/ for advice and free letter templates to send to banks.
However.........there is a court case pending just now to decide the legality of these charges. Until it is decided I believe the Office of Fair Trading have said banks can withhold further payments.

Check out Moneysavingexpert.com website. They have templates on how to do it and all the info you need.
The FSA have suspended claims until 26th Jan so might be tricky to claim if that suspension gets extended as it was previously.

grannysan
My son did; got all his bank charges back by using the on-line site "moneysavingexpert". The site gave examples (downloadable) of the letters to send, etc.

Try it - lots of help there if you want to reclaim bank charges.

Good luck!
Sandra

Ho fo sho
with all this trouble with the banks, ive heard they wont be in a position to pay back any of the bloody unfair charges. moneysavingexpert.co.uk or something was good. good luck
