It depends what your tax code is |

If you Google hmrc/payecalculation, several sites will come up. Choose one, see the calculation chart, enter your details, and it will give you exact figures. |

It all depends on your tax code.
Add a zero to your tax code and this gives you the amount per year that you are allowed to earn before tax. Divide this figure by 12 and this is the monthly tax free amount. The tax paid should be about 20%, I think, of the tax free amount. |

Doesn't look necessarily wrong I'm afraid. Is this just tax or a combination of tax and National Insurance (both elements should be displayed seperately on a payslip)?
The code which you qouted is what the vast majority of employees also have. It's called cumulative which means it takes into account all the tax and pay that you've had during the tax year when the monthly calculation takes place. What happens is the payroll system will add together all your earnings to date, work out what the tax should be at that point, look at what tax you've paid so far and deduct the difference. If your earnings decrease suddenly then the tax will proportionately decrease too - and vica versa for any increase. Check that there's not a little 'X' or 'M1/W1' after the bit which says 522L. This is what's known as Week1/Month1 calculation method and doesn't take into account any earnings/tax to date when it makes the calculation. This type of code is often refered to as the dreaded emergency tax. Sounds dramatic but is essentially a temporary code until either a P45 is applied or the Inland Revenue issue a cumulative code (which, by and large, is the fairest method of tax calculation).
In short - it's probably right! Besides, most payroll software packages that companies use tend to be pretty watertight when it comes to working out tax. Most people are usually alarmed at the amount that actually gets taken for tax and NI too. |

20% of your yearly income minus £5225 which is your tax code. You still have NI contributions to calculate.
Plus, if you have only just started the job you could be getting "emergency" tax untill you are sorted out.
Here's a simple guide to the tax system... |

This looks about right. Why do you think its wrong - have you spoken to your payroll dept? |

It all depends on your Tax Code. Talk to the Revenue & Customs team and they will confirm how much you should have been taxed. They really expect people to call them. |
