If you rent from the council or private rent you will able to claim housing benefit. It may not pay the whole lot of your rent but its a good start. Also, you will be able to claim council tax benefit where you should get it all paid. I am speaking from personal experience as a tennent when my husband lost his job, thankfully he is back at work now. Dont quote me on this but if you have a mortgage (I have never been in this situation) you can claim to pay the interest while your husband is unemployed. I dont know much about that side of things though. I dont know if there is much else you can get to be honest and this does take a while to get going because as you will find out, the people in charge of benefits dont rush themselves. Keep a copy of all the important dates, ie. date your husband lost his job, date you applied for benefis, date you recieved benefit. These may come in handy one day if you have to tell anybody any dates. Good luck.

Definitely Child Tax Credits, these have replaced the amounts that used to be added on for children onto JSA or Income Support.
https://www.taxcredits.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/Qualify/WhatAreTaxCredits.aspx

You can't get Income Support because that is instead of JSA, not on top of it.

I imagine you are getting child benefit anyway.

If your husband is on income-based as opposed to contribution-based JSA you can get a cold weather payment of £25 a week for exceptionally cold weather as you have children under 5. You should get this automatically if you qualify and it is cold enough:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/Inretirement/DG_10018668

You may also be able to get your fares paid if you have any hospital appointments:
http://www.nhs.uk/Planners/pregnancycareplanner/Pages/Hospitalfares.aspx

When you get Child Tax Credits or if it’s income-based JSA you can get the Healthy Start Vouchers for each child under 4 to buy milk or fresh fruit and vegetables, it is only £3 a week but it all helps:
http://www.healthystart.nhs.uk/en/fe/page.asp?n1=1&n2=2&n3=18

Plus of course what the others have said about housing and council tax benefit.
If you need to find out about the mortgage interest payment it is called SMI, Support for Mortgage Interest, but they usually don’t pay it for the first thirteen weeks.

And of course, I don’t want to be pessimistic, but if your husband is still unemployed when the elder one starts school, apply to your local council for free school meals, some of them do school clothing vouchers as well. Hopefully it won’t come to that.

Good luck!

yes and child benefit unless you work then you could also get family tax credit but if you don't work thats it Im afraid. You may get help with your community tax, and rent though free prescriptions and milk for the kids probably

pte:D42
income suport housing benifit council tax and help with child benifits ect maybe a tax rebate from inland revenue

starlight
you will not get income support but income based jobseekers allowance, £94 is about the going rate im afraid. you will be able to get more tax credits if you ring them and tell them your husband is claiming jsa. apart from thats its about your lot ... you should be able to get housing benefit, council tax benefit and contact your waterboard cos you maybe entitled to a reduction in your water bill aswell.

SAM O
job seekers
income support
and inform child tax credits they can increase your income straight away. income support will take awhile longer but child tax credits can adjust your income for the following week

ForeverChanging
You and your husband make a joint claim for jobseekers, and you claim childrens tax credit for your kids

DJJD
If you are not working, he can claim Job seekers allowance. You may also qualify for Council tax benefit, Housing benefit (if you rent) and child tax credits. If 'you' work more than 16 hours a week, you can claim working tax credits too.
Redundancy pay?
