bj | Help! income tax is due, can I get an extension? |
Here's what happening my boss is out of the country and so I'm trying to help him file a request for a tax extension. (he won't be back for another 6 months).
I searched online and found this form, it's 4868, extension of time to file an income tax return.
It asks for name, social security no. etc. In Part 2 it asks some questions like estimate of tax owed, amount you are paying. Someone told me just to enter zero in those boxes and mail the form in, is that right? Additional Details thanks to everyone for your ans. The day after I posted this the boss's wife came by...I wasn't aware that she's an accountant and so I gave it to her and she will take care of it. |

The easiest way to file a 4868 is to do it online. You can use a website like FileLater.com. They'll submit it to the IRS for you and you'll get an email confirming the IRS has accepted the extension. I have used them before and have had good results. |

That would be correct IF you are SURE that you will get a refund when you file. However if you think that you might OWE when you file then you must enclose a payment for the estimated tax due with the Form 4868. Taxes are due no later than April 15th. If you owe anything past that date, penalties and interest will be tacked on.
BTW, you cannot file this on behalf of your boss. He has to file it himself, sign and mail it. And if this is for his business return (Corporate or Partnership, etc.) then Form 4868 is not the correct form. He'd need Form 7004 for that. |

If you (or he) aren't going to owe any tax, then yes that's right. An extension is just an extension to file the return, not to pay - any money due is still due 4/15. |

nope,at least you have to send some money lets say 15% or 20% of total gross after all if is not suficient they let you know but you show"good will" |

Your boss should be doing this. My son did it from Korea. It might actually be quicker for him to file his forms without your help. |

Your boss can file electronically at many places. He'll have to pay any estimated tax due. If he puts nothing, and something ends up being due, he'll owe interest and penalties but these usually aren't much. Since he's out of the country on the due-date he'll probably be able to get the penalties waived as long as he files promptly and doesn't owe too much money. |

Sort of. If he is going to owe any money and no money is sent with the form 4868, there can be a fine & interest charged on the actual return... |

IRS will charge you interest and penalties if you don’t file your tax return and pay the taxes on time. If you are not in a position to pay full amount and file your taxes by the due date, you must act now. This is what you can do to reduce interest and penalty:
1. Pay as much as you can before April 15, 2008,
2. File form 4868 for extension to file,
3. Make a short term arrangement with IRS, and
4. Apply for installment arrangement.
