peopleRpeople | Help should i go to work get £480 pm and pay £400 in childcare? |
i am faced with the most awful dilemma I have not worked for the past 18months as I have been looking after my child. Financially this has been tough and now we are at our limit with loans and credit cards i have been looking for work and have found a part time job. I will be earning £480 a month and paying £400 a month in childcare. At the moment i get £240 pm on benefits isn't this crazy. Additional Details my awful dilemma is this i have been at home looking after my child who is 14months old, we are struggling financially and i have just got a job as you can see I would be £80 better off if i work, but at the moment I get £240 on benefits, I would only be entitled to £10 a week on working and child tax credits and we have just moved to a new area so we have no family or friends nearby who could help. I dont really want to pay someone else to bring my kid up I rather do it myself and give her the tlc she wouldnt get in a nursery she would just be another kid. I hate this situation surely other people must face similar probs doesnt the govt know, i thought they were supposed to help people return to work. i thought kids needed their parents what for to pay someone else to lookafter them. |

Hiya I faced this exact dilemma, i wanted too stay home to give my kids the best start and be there for them when they come home from nursery/school or when they are ill etc. It is made so hard though and like yourself we were stretched to the limit living off just my husbands wage that something had to give but by the time you pay the childcare the wage isn't worth the hassle of getting kids ready, looked after getting to and from work, time off if kids sick etc etc. Then I found a fab job offer that allows me to choose when to work so I fit it around my husbands rota and days off and around my family life and still make a very good income. I do not need to pay out for childcare and whats more I have fun while I earn. Now me and my hubby are less stressed which makes a happier home life. You can email me if you would like details as I cannot advertise here, but whatever your decision good luck and weigh up all the pros and cons before you decide as most childcarers have you in a contract which you need to honour even if you decide to later give up the work. |

Yeah it works out to be basically the same amount either way...I think you should stay at home still because then you don't have to pay for childcare and can have more money to pay bills etc. |

Are you a lone parent or do you have a partner?
If lone parent have you taken into account Tax Credits will pay 80% of your childcare costs, go see Lone Parent Adviser at Jobcentre they'll do a calculation to give you a better idea of what you could be getting. Also can tell you about other things you maybe entitled to when you start work 16 hrs pwk or more.
If you've got a partner have you taken into account his wages may still get help from Tax Credits with childcare give them a call 0845 300 3900 to find out if can still get help |

Hi. Why don't you look at a home based business where you can look after your child, and determine how much effort you put in. We can show you how to change your financial situation, WITHOUT having to get someone else to look after your family, while earning good money and the quality of life that you and your child deserve. It is crazy isn't it? Can you get help with child care costs through Working Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits? It might be worth checking. I think that I would try to go back to work for a few hours a week to keep my hand in - so to speak.
Good luck. |

Isn't there anyone you know who has children that you could share babysitting duties with? For example, they could have them one day and you another and then a child minder for the other days, and you could split the amounts.
Or also, the child's grandparents, aunts or uncles may help out while you get sorted, but don't put pressure on them. |

It all depends on whether you are only working for the money, or for other reasons such as your personal development, self esteem and so on.
Child care is expensive because we expect our children to be properly looked after - you get what you pay for.
Although you may be working for next to nothing right now, this may pay off in the future when a better paid job turns up and you are able to demonstrate the skills and experience to do that job.
The care you give your child at home is very important, but the quality of that care is also vital. Working may alleviate your financial problems a bit and the time you do have with your child will be more productive and creative. |

You'll be earning £400 is this before or after tax??
Its totally pointless isnt it? I had the same thing, I was paying my Childminder £45 a day and my tax credit was £40.50 a month! Now i'm at home with our second child, and there was just no way we could afford to put 2 children in childcare all day.
Now my husband has a new job with more money, makes things easier, but it was touch & go & had to cut back on everything. We have a financial adviser who helped us get back on track.
See a adviser to see if theres a way to cut bills and maybe get an evening job when a family member can sit with the kids? |

Whats the sense in breaking your back to work when you only get a 80. Look for a better paid job. You rather spend the quality time with your child then to slog! |

Hi I had this problem too when my kids were young, what i did was become a registered childminder that meant i could have my kids with me all the time and then get paid to look after another persons child i really enjoyed this and my kids loved having playmates too! it was my health visitor who suggested this and it worked for me ask at your local council /social services offices for details to become registered. |
