A P45 helps a new employer decide what tax should be deducted out of a monthly salary in order that PAYE should be satisfied.
If you have no P45, it may mean that you go on an emergency tax status which might cause you to pay too much tax on a PAYE basis. (however it can be claimed back after you fill in a tax return)
However, as we have just started a new tax year it should make very little difference to your taxation status at all.
Tax years run from April 6th to April 5th each year. We are now in the tax year 2008/2009 and so earning prior to 5/4/2008 will not be very useful to a new employer.
Your P45 which would be relevant to a new employer, would only contain earnings from 5/4/2008.
I should not think it is necessary for this reason. Fill in a P46! |

if u have been on benefits ask yr jobcentre what to do they will help u sort it out, if u havent then yr new employer will give u a p46 to fill in which is a form sent to the tax office if no p45 is availalbe |

You would never get the original form P45 back, but if you left after 06/04/07, last employer should have given you one. When you were not working, did you sign on for Jobseekers? I am assuming not.
Any new employer wouldn't be able to use a form P45 that old, and the cut-off date would have been 05/04/08, anyway.
As other posters have said, new employer will prepare form P46, and ask you to sign it to say his employment is your only or main one. Emergency tax is approximately the same as normal tax, but if there is a gap between 06/04/08, the start of the tax year, and when you start work, you will have a backlog of tax allowances. Download form P91 from hmrc/p91, complete it back to the time you left last job, and send it to tax office to ask for a cumulative code number. You can't do this until new employer has registered the employment with his tax office, as there is no employer currently to issue the code number to.
Unless you were getting Jobseekers, Jobcentre can't help, you will have to contact HMRC. |

Ask your new employer for a P46 as your P45 is an old one and wouldn't be of any use. |

You employer should have issued you with a P45 when you left, each time you leave an employment you should receive a P45 from the employer
Ask you current employer for a P46 and fill in this form, this form is used for employees without a P45 |

Your P45 from the last employer would only be relevant if you were starting a new employment in the same tax year as the last one ended. As your new job will start in a different tax year, you will not need it. You should complete a P46 and ask your new employer to send it off to their PAYE office. You may be on an emergency tax code to start with but this can be fixed. |

If you have no P45, you will be given a P46 to fill out. As simple as dee d says! |

Just ask your new employer for a P46 that you can fill out. Your old P45 would be out of date now anyway so of no use.
It all very simple really. |
