You can file a schedule C and claim a per-diem rate deduction. The rate changes from city to city so check with the IRS for per-diem rates. You can not use a 1040ez. you can use either 1040 or 1040a. The per-diem dediction is not listen on schedule C but you can enter it on the second page under other expenses.

From 1040- Long Form
Schedule 2106-Unreimbursed Business expenses
Sched A-Itemized deductions

Ignore the post about using a schedule C.

You file a 1040 and put your wages on line 7.

As for occasionally going out of town, who pays for the expenes?

If you are an employee, then you can deduct your employee business expenses only as itemized deduction on schedule A.

Wow, you brought a lot of losers out on this one! :)

The correct answer was the one that said use form 2106, Sch A and of course the 1040.

Truckers are a rare breed, they can claim meals over and above the normal business traveler and also other fees, such as maps, tools, lumper fees, etc.

If this is your first year, your best bet is to have your taxes done by someone who has done trucker returns so that you have a good plan to go by next year if you decide to do your own.

Ask your employer about the W2. Do they take fed tax sos sec etc etc etc state taxes out from their home base you go to? If yes, it will be mailed or given to you. If you have no write offs etc, you can use a standard 1040.
If yes and you are not reimburst for gas and supplies, you need all your reciepts and a 1040 long form.
I I think you need to consult a prof tax person, since this is your first time, you will learn what is needed for the following years.
IRS.GOV has all the forms, but every single tax payer can have things regarding their income that does not match someone elses. The Gov is not forgiving if you make a mistake, they charge huge fees.

If the answer is no, that they hand you cash, you need to consult a tax prof to help you pay as little as possible and the reciepts and data they need to assist you with this.
If you have not already done so, in the future save every single gas oil or related reciept, hotel bill, motel bill, supplies you need to perform your job that are specific. Keep all this each year and put it away in case you are ever audited in years to come.
You are the only one who loses out if you a dont file, b dont file correctly c dont save all the info that you used in filing your taxes.
The gov can garnish your wages, and make your life a living heck.

Are you a statuatory employee? Best to have your taxes done professionally at least the first year.
