Hi, I got my paycheck and it was $600.00 and the withholding tax was, FICA-SS $37.20, FICA-Med $8.70 and?
Fedral W/H $39.81, State W/H $20.24, Local $9.00, doese any one knows if this is reasonable? and what each one stand for?
My employer doesnt provide Medcare so why still they are cutting FICA-Med?

I am New in the states. So, detailed answers will be really really so very appreciated.

Thanks in adance.

The FICA taxes are exactly accurate, total 7.65%, which your employer matches.

The other taxes are depending on what state, local, and how many exemptions you claimed, married or single. But they look reasonable.

Welcome to the working world.

These are taxes that every worker in America pays. Whether it is reasonable or not is debatable, but that's the way it is.

Employers don't "provide Medicare," the government does when you are of retirement age and then most people still have to pay Medicare premiums and deductables...........basically, the government is borrowing your money, intrest free, until it's time to pay you for your retirement (provided that there is anything left by then).

Medicare is a payroll tax, like Social Security, that everyone must pay. It doesn't mean that you are enrolled in Medicare.
FICA is Social Security tax. Again, everyone pays it.

Your federal withholding is your government taxes you pay (this is what you file a tax return from each year). The FICA-SS is you paying in for your retirement when you retire. State and local tax goes to the state you reside in. The medicare is standard deduction, it also goes with your retirement. It is health insurance for when you retire. It has nothing to do with employer insurance. It is hard to tell if the figures are right they are withholding without knowing the dollar amount of your check. However, it does seem correct. I hope this helps.

You don't say what state you are in, or enough about your personal situation to tell, but the amounts don't sound unreasonable. FICA-SS is for social security, a government retirement and disability program, and FICA-med is for Medicare, a government health program for people over age 65. Those are mandatory.

The two w/h amounts are withholding for federal and state income tax. Early next year you'll fill out a tax form showing all your income for the year, and your withholding, and calculating your tax for the year. The withholding will be applied to your tax. If too much was withheld, the extra will be refunded to you. If not enough is withheld, you'll have to pay the difference.

If you are a resident (even for tax purpose), then you must pay SS at 6.2% and Medicare at 1.45%.
Federal income tax, state income tax and local tax are deducted bases on what you claimed on your W4.

INFLUENCE
The FICA-SS if for Social Security and the FICA-Med is for Medicare (a government program that has nothing to do with your employer). These two amounts are fine and you have no control over them. Social security and Medicare should always total 7.6% of your net paycheck, which in this case it does. Your employer pays the same amount of social security and medicare that you do, so in all it totals 15.2%. The federal withholding is what you base your federal taxes paid on when completing your federal tax return. The state withholding is what you base your state taxes paid on when computing your state tax return. Most cities usually don't have a local income tax, but apparently yours does (I'm guessing you live somewhere in Ohio or Kentucky since those states tend to have more cities that do charge a local income tax). All amounts seem in accordance with your income, so everything seems reasonable to me.
