Zoe S | Hi, My daughter has left school and got her fist part time job.? |
She is only 16 and is being taxed on everything she earns.
Is this right? If not has any one got any advice on how i get the tax back for her or get a lower rate?? |

sounds like she is on basic rate emergency tax code . get her to complete a P46 with her new employer and he should then send it to HMRC (the employer will have this form). She will then get a tax code issued and anything she has paid over the correct amount will be returned to her |

She's probably entitled to a rebate. I'd ring your tax office - they're usually quite helpful and will send you the necessary forms or make adjustments to her tax rate. |

She needs to fill in a declaration stating that it is her only job - because it is part time they are probably assuming she is doing it in addition to a main job. |

Hi
No this isn't right, they have put her on BR (basic rate) tax code, because they probably haven't received a notice of coding from HMRC. If your daughter has received a notice of coding from them, she should forward it to their HR or payroll dept. I f she hasn't, to speed things up, either check on the HMRC.gov.uk website for who to phone or ask the payroll dept for the tax office that deals with their tax contributions and they should help your daughter out, whoever you phone you will need her NI number. Good luck
Take Care
Zoe, please ignore LLCOOLES, clearly thinks this is the US Y/A, probably means well but our tax system in the UK is different. |

If it's her first pay slip on her first job, this is pretty normal. When she started, the company will have filled out some forms to send to HMRC to calculate her tax liability. Sometime this doesn't get processed in time for the first pay, and so a 'emergency' rate is used. Her next pay should balance the difference out. If not, contact the HR who will be able to correct it. |

She should get it back if you ring the companies pay department they can send a form out and then if its same as it was for me the next month I got all the tax back I just cant remember the number of the form. |

Your daughter's age or working status has nothing to do with how much tax is taken out of her income. If she earns an income, she is taxed like everyone else. What you should consider is if you are going to claim her on your income tax return an a dependent. If your daughter earns less than around $5,200 for the year, she should get back most all of the federal withholding that was taken out of her check. Her filing status would be single. But if she earns more than that, you will need to make the decision if you are to claim her or not. Because if you do not, that will give you one less exemption to clam and increase your taxable income. If you have other children to claim, this might not hurt you too much. But if she is your only child, then not claiming her on your taxes would chande your filing status from Head of household to single. Again, this would reduce the amount of money you can subract from your taxable income. |

If your daughter is no longer in full time education, then she will be taxed at the full tarrif, unless she qualifies for emergency tax.
Otherwise, then yes, it is correct that she's taxed on everything she earns. |
