Can't think of any situations where you can stop SS from being withheld, but you you can minimize the amount of social security with some pretax deductions such as (SS is not withheld on them, neither is federal withholding):

pretax medical expenses
medical spending account
pretax public transportation or parking

Join a religious sect such as several groups within the Mennonites who do not believe in accepting any kind of insurance or public assistance.

1. Become a Christian Science practitioner or a member of a certain other religious orders. You may apply for an exemption from Social Security tax based on conscientious opposition to public insurance because of personal religious considerations. The exemption applies only to services performed for the religious organization.

2. Go to college and work for the same college while a student.

3. If you're under age 18, deliver newspapers.

4. If you're under age 18, work for your parent's company.

5. Move to a foreign country and work for a foreign company.

Become a citizen of a country that has a treaty with the U.S. that says that citizens of that country who work in the U.S. will pay into only that country's social security system and not the U.S.'s. Note that you have to be only a citizen of that country; the treaty does not apply if you remain also a U.S. citizen.

The most common employees not subject to Social Security are school teachers. You could also work for a church that opted out of Social Security but then you would have to pay self-employment tax instead unless you are a clergyman. Other than that, you would have to join the Amish (not the Mennonites in general) and be self-employed.

Go to work for an organization that doesn't contribute to Social Security (federal, state, town/city government). Otherwise, you can't avoid having it taken out.
