You can't legally get your mother's tax return info unless you have power of attorney, which you obviously don't. Talk to her again about why you need this. Good luck. |

Without WRITTEN authorization from your mother, NO ONE can legally give you ANY information regarding your mothers tax return. Technically, Jackson Hewitt can't even confirm that the prepared a return for your mother.
When and if I have children going to college, the answer they will get is "We don't qualify for need based aid". I will have a college savings plan, but they won't see my tax returns. |

It's private information - you don't have any legal access to it.
If you live with her, you'll just have to nag her into it. If you don't, well, you're not her dependent so it shouldn't matter. |

Call Jackson Hewitt and find out what type of documentation they will require to release the return to you. With out your mothers authorization, they will not talk to you.
A simpler solution would be going to your mother and getting it yourself.

You'll need her written authorization to release her 1040 to you. Type up a simple letter, possibly include a power of attorney clause specific to her 1040 and have her sign it. Take it to the preparer and they should be able to give you a copy. There is also a form from the IRS that she could sign that would allow the IRS to give you a copy. You'll need her social security number and address.

You can go to irs.gov and request a free transcript of her tax return (Form 4506-T), which will show you the same information as the actual tax return. If you want a copy of the actual tax return, you have to pay for it.
Your mom will need to sign the form, of course. |
