How bad is to skip filling taxes for more than 3 years?
Here is my problem I didn't file taxes in 02, 03, 04, 06 and 07, and the IRS just send me a letter that I need to pay for 06 and 07 close to 6000 dollars, if not they will go to my employer and they will take it from my paycheck... I call the IRS today, they will send me all my info and i have until january 4 to to file for the previous Years, before they start taking out money from my paycheck. I'm scare and not sure what to do. I usually claim 4 me and my mom since she depends of me. How bad is the situation and should i get a lawyer? I also cash my 401K in 2004 and didn't pay taxes....
Additional Details
can the IRS provide me with W2s, 1099s.?

Congratulations on getting your life straightened out. You still owe the taxes though. Apparently you didn't owe anything for those earlier years, or they didn't catch it - you probably had enough withheld to cover what you owed, and it's too late now to claim any refund.

A lawyer isn't going to help you, but you could use a CPA or enrolled agent to help you get your returns filed. If you can legally claim your mom as a dependent, then you might end up not owing that much, but would still owe most of it unless you have deductions allowable that you didn't mention. If you can't pay it all at once, they might let you set up a payment plan if you get the returns filed, or might go ahead and garnish your paychecks.

Yes, the IRS can furnish you with the W-2's and 1099's

Good luck.

You haven't filed a number of years returns and, based on the information available, IRS determined that you did not have enough withheld to pay what you owed and you did not respond. Now you have what IRS calls a Substitute for Return Assessment. To make peace, you need to file all your delinquent returns for the past six years and make arrangements for payment. This should not be too difficult once the returns are done.

It may not be as bad as you think. The IRS doesnt know how many deductions you have. They just look at your income. Get the taxes prepared. Once they are done you may find that you do not owe any money. If you had refunds due then you wont owe taxes and penalties. You will not receive any refunds for more than 3 years back. Those are lost. Usually when you cash in a 401k they automatically withhold taxes. You will need to do both federal and state. They do talk to each other. You will feel much better once they are done. Go to a professional. It is going to cost you several hundred dollars to do this. A lot less than 6k.

Talk to an accountant. Someone has to file all those returns and you need to try and find all of your supporting documentation (W2s, 1099s). The IRS is not someone that you want to mess around with. Get this straightened out NOW and don't do it again.

You must file all the tax returns. If you do not have W2s for previous years, you can get info from IRS.

You need to get to an accountant or an IRS agent and let them help you straighten this out. You need *way* more help than we can possibly give you here.

The only way to straighten everything out is to file. I have seen an IRS letter stating a friend owed $7000 but after filing out the form she should have sent in 2 years prior she was due a $2500 refund. You have to keep in mind that you did cash in a 401K which you will have to pay a penalty on regardless.

No need to get a lawyer, contact an Enrolled Agent. They are people who specialized in taxes other than CPAs and tax lawyers.

In the $6000 you currently owe, IRS might also have included interest and penalties, but talk to a tax professional, and ask if you qualify for "reasonable cause abatement of penalties and interest" So, if you qualify, you might end up owing less.

Some people I know didn't pay their taxes. The government seized their house, their car, all their personal assets and put a lien on their paychecks. In other words, BAD.

How bad is it? Let's put it this way. You may be getting to know O.J. on a very intimate level in the near future.
