tourdesub | How can 95% of taxpayers receive a tax cut when 40% do not pay any income taxes? |
I'm confused about Obama's tax plan. Which 95%? Is it people who actually pay income taxes or is it 95% of the population in general? Is it income taxes he wants to cut? Or is it payroll taxes or capital gains tax or something else?
Remember, if the bush tax cuts are not extended past 2009 and 2010 this will automatically increase taxes to a lot of people, not just those who make $250,000+ and not just a little. I fear they will not be extended. A lot of tax payers (people who actually pay income taxes) will be in for an unpleasant surprise. |

His plan will give tax cuts to 95% of Americans and yes 40% do not pay taxes. Therefore it's basically redistributing the wealth from those who pay taxes to give rebates to people who don't pay. Why can't Americans see it? It's amazing how ignorant a lot of the population is.
Also he plans to raise tax on the wealthy. Well the person who owns my company is wealthy. We started as a small business and now are a medium sized business which employs 600 people. If taxes are increased on my business owner we will have to layoff workers, increase our prices, and will get lower pay raises next year. There are at least 3 people in my office that don't really do much right now and could easily be laid off if taxes are raised on my company.
Corporations in essence do not pay taxes, they just raise their prices so that the consumer pays... so if corporate taxes go up, prices go up on everything, making it harder for every family to buy the same things.
It's basic economics but it seems like most of America wasn't required to take Economics 101 in high school or college. I know I was. |

Not only do 40% not pay any taxes, but they will still receive a "tax refund" check in the mail. Explain that one to me. It's called income redistribution. Steal from the rich and give to the poor.
And do you really think Obama has any intention of giving the middle class a tax cut? Come on get real. Bill Clinton ran on the same thing. Tax cut for the middle class. What was the first thing he did when he took office? Enacted the largest middle class tax increase in US history. Obama's plans include an additional $120 billion in spending. Where is that money gonna come from? You guessed it, the middle class!! |

I fear Obama's tax plan. And yes, I never thought about that, but it's true that if 40% of people don't pay income taxes, how can 95%pay income taxes? Sorry that doesn't really answer the question. |

If you don't pay tax you aren't a taxpayer... |

I've been kind of surprised too that nobody asks that. He's apparently talking about doing something like increasing EIC to give the people who don't pay taxes more government money. In some quarters this is called redistribution of wealth rather than a tax cut. He has said 95% of working families, not 95% of taxpayers.
In any case, and this is the same for either candidate's "plans", a president can't give anyone one cent, it's Congress that can change tax law, not the president. |

40% of workers may not have income tax, but they still pay payroll tax. Payroll tax is higher than income tax for the majority of Americans. |

its simple math really, 135% of us pay phantom taxes |

Once again: 95% of tax PAYERS, not 95% of Americans. It's hard to give a tax cut to someone who doesn't have, or has never had a job. In actuality, both candidates proposals depends on whether you assume the current tax breaks would be renewed or would expire.
"Assuming they would have been renewed anyway, Obama's plan would bring in an additional $700 billion in taxes over the next 10 years, while McCain's would cost the Treasury $600 billion. Assuming legislators would have let the tax breaks expire, Obama's plan would cost the U.S. Treasury $2.7 trillion and McCain's $3.7 trillion." |

It is 95% of "taxpayers." People who do not pay taxes are not taxpayers. 95% of the 60% of people who pay taxes will get tax cuts. Supposedly. |
