Technically, as far as I know of, you can't. If asking him is out of the question, and there's nothing in the divorce agreement regarding how to claim the children from year to year, and no one else is volunteering the information, it's not considered to be information that can be released to you.

You either have to be the taxpayer, or have Power of Attorney in order to access tax records. If there is an outstanding issue regarding tax returns from when you were still married, that's another issue, but if you're just wanting to check up on him, you don't have the right to access to his tax records.

I'm sure someone probably knows of a way to get around the system, but it's not legal for you to do so.

Hope this helps!

You can't. Why is it any of your concern?

If you think he's claiming one or more of your children as a dependent - if you claim them on your return and he does also, you'll both hear from the IRS asking for proof that you are the one with the right to claim them.

If he owes back child support, you can go through your local support agency to get any refund he has seized, but if he doen't have a refund, that won't help any.

Legally, you cannot, as you are not a party to his financial reporting to the government. However, if you are legally allowed to adjust your alimony or child support as a result of his current financial position, you can probably get your lawyer to subpoena his tax records. The other way is if you question his earlier filing as they relate to your divorce settlement (i.e., you think he was underreporting so he wouldn't have to pay you as much). Good hunting!

You can't. It's none of your business. Tax returns are confidential. The only time that you had a right to know the contents of any return he filed was when you filed a joint return with him. Now that he's an ex, you have no right to that what so ever.

CRA
Ask him. Otherwise, you cannot find out as it is confidential.

acmeraven
Legally you can't if he is an ex-husband. Be careful what you do as there are stiff fines and jail sentences if you tamper with what the IRS considers their turf.

Why do you care? Worry about something important if you need to.

Yeah, you would have to ask him for a copy of his 1040. He is not obligated to share this information unless you take him to court and get the judge to supena (sp?) him to present it to you. There is no other way the key term in ex-husband is EX.
