If you are employing 3 lads to work for you, then you cannot avoid paying tax. You will be liable for VAT, national Insurance for your employees, and Income tax on your earnings.
You risk a jail sentence or a very heavy fine if you do not comply. The Inland revenue employ very experienced investigators and they are qualified in estimating Income tax for all trades.
I knew a Farmer who thought he could get away paying Income tax by undervaluing his livestock. An Inspector from the Inland revenue visited him and his estimate for the value of his livestock was within 3 pounds of their actual value. |

Hi Nick
I'm an accountant and my first bit of advice is don't try to avoid tax...you can legitimately make it pretty small and the taxman puts a lot of effort into catching people who try to avoid it-and then penalises them heavily!
Speak to a local chartered accountant and they should be able to help you to structure your business so that you use a low tax legal structure. Also they will be able to give you advice about the different sorts of expenses that you can claim tax relief on.
Don't forget that businesses pay tax on profit not on sales, the smaller the profit, the smaller the tax.
Also, keep a track of how much your sales are. If you sell more than £67k in a 12-month period you will have to register for VAT.
Remember practical things like insurance - its there to protect you when things go wrong.
Take tax seriously I know someone who was made bankrupt because he tried to avoid tax - he managed it for a couple of years and then the taxman caught him!
