Mileage to and from your regular place of work is a commuting expense, which is not tax deductible.

If you have a fixed place a work, like an office, a store, a factory, etc, then you cannot deduct you milage to and from work.

Sorry, but if you're only driving to and from the office from home, I don't know of any loophole that you can use to claim this on your income tax. If you're driving FOR work, mind you, (eg: doing a sales call to a prospective client), I understand that you can log the mileage and claim a percentage of this.

ninasgramma
Daily commuting of an employee to their regular place of work is never deductible.

Mileage from a first job to a second job is deductible. Mileage to a temporary assignment away from your regular place of work is deductible. Mileage to work-related education is deductible. Mileage you have for errands you run for your employer is deductible.

If you have deductible mileage as an employee, it is deducted on Schedule A, Miscellaneous Deductions subject to a 2% floor of your adjusted gross income. You will use Form 2106 to figure the mileage deduction that is recorded on Schedule A.

You can do it if you're a consultant and the mileage is a business expense, and I think you can do it if you're going from your first job to your second job (that may no longer be true, but it once was).
Otherwise, and I've looked at this pretty hard, you cannot deduct ordinary commuting expenses, which includes mileage, bus fare, train fare, parking, or tolls. Sorry.

I know one guy who was buying and selling stuff on eBay, and claimed his mileage to work and back as part of his eBay business. He claimed that he was going to garage sales and flea markets to get eBay merchandise. I don't know if this is a good way to claim mileage, but he said that's what his CPA told him to claim.

If you're an employee, then it's not deductible. If you're an independent contractor or own your own business, you might be able to deduct it.

unless you are self-employed you don't deduct that at all.
