How can i file the Tax with two W2's?
I have a situation here, i have worked in one organization from January to July and i have joined a different organization in where i am currently working on. So when it comes to Tax returns i should be getting two W2's. I don't have any problems getting the W2 from my current organization. The real problem i have is with my previous employer who is supposed to provide me the W2. Is it by law that every employer should send the W2 to the employees. And i also have changed my residence and i haven't communicated that to my previous employer but i have forwarded all the mails from my previous address to my new address. Will this be a problem for my filing? Please advice. Need help ASAP.

You need to call or write to your previous employer to give them your new address, just in case the forwarding doesn't work out quite right. Just tell them you're providing it to them so that you can get your tax forms timely.

All employers, whether "ex" or current, are required by law to send you a W-2 if you worked for them. They face huge fines for even being late, so you shouldn't worry too much about it. Most employers know the consequences of messing around with taxes, withholding, and/or tax forms.

Good luck. :0)

Since you have left a forwarding address from your old address to your new one, the W-2 should find you. It may just take a couple of days longer. But it would be a good idea to contact the old employer and give him your new address.

Just add the W-2s together when you get them to enter them onto your tax return. If you use software that efiles (Turbo Tax or others like it), they will want you to enter each one separately and it adds everything together for you.

Let your old employer know what your new address is, so they know where to send your W-2. The post office might forward it if you filed an address change with them.

When you file you'll add the two W-2's together. If you use tax software, most let you enter the two individually and add them for you.

No this will not be a problem. You just need to call and make sure they have your current address. Otherwise it will be returned back to the sender.

Just a side note, some employers upload W2's online. Maybe that's an option.

You should make sure your previous employer has a current address for you. Lots of employers are now putting the info out electronically and you have to enter a pin number to retrieve and print your W-2.

Call the first employer and give him your current address. Do not depend on mail being forwarded. If it gets returned to the employer he will just file it and you will have to contact him to get a copy anyway.

Hi there,

You have a very common problem with a painful solution. The IRS will not accept substitute W-2s until mid-February. At that time you can use your last pay stub and file. This assumes that your last pay stub shows year-to-date figures and can be used in place of a W-2. If you don't have your last pay stub or it doesn't show year-to-date figures, you must wait until August 2009 when the IRS up loads all the W-2s it has and release that information to the public. Your employer is required to send you a W-2 but that's an issue beyond your control if he sends it to an old address and it doesn't get to you. Try to get a W-2 directly from your old employer will be your best option.

yes.. you'll get 2 of them and you add them together and put them on your return.
yes, it's a law that a company must provide you with a w2

You should get W2 from each employee. Contact your previous employer and inform them of your new address.

You may be able to file without W2. However, you should wait till you get all the Forms like W2s and 1099s. If you file based on last pay slip, you may have to file amended tax return if there is any different figure in W2 or 1099. Read http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/04/list-of-articles.html

Contact your previous employer. Let them know your current address and ask them if they can "FAX" your W-2 to you. A lot of times they are willing to do this for you and you can have it faxed to your tax preparers office for free.

jeholman25
that's fine, just add the two together when you file and be sure to attach both to your return. I would give you old employer your new address so they send it to the right place.
