How can i find out if i have been overpaying my Tax??
I am just wondereing how i can find out if i have been paying too much tax to HMRC. I have been self employed for the past 4 years. April 06 i received a letter stating that i have underpaid my tax, and had to give HMRC £500, than the same happened in april 07 but this time £800.

How can i find out if i have been overpaying HMRC??

Thanks in advance

This is a bit vague without knowing specifically why you think you have overpaid.
You can call in at your local taxes enquiry centre and ask them to show you how they have calculated your tax for the years in question and for them to explain anything you don't understand. However, if you have made full and accurate self assessments for these years, the tax should be correct.
if you are still unsure, get the CAB to check it for you, or pay an accountant for a one-off piece of advice.

You're bound to have. Anyone who pays tax is overpaying. x

do you have an accountant? have you done your tax returns yourself?

if you do them yourself, then its likely you have overpaid as you wont know all the little bits to claim for and therefore reduce you tax bill.

get yourself and accountant, sure it will cost a few hundred quid to get it done, but they can go through previous accounts and returns filed and amend them so they are correct, thus reducing the tax owed and you could get a refund.

As a rough guide, deduct the first £4000 from your yearly earnings, then you should pay about 20%(one fifth) of the remainder.

Unless you think it is by a lot, don't bother . You will spend more on phone calls than you will ever get back. And probably end up paying more. LOL

First, you need to write to the HMRC and get a copy of the preparation books for taxes from the last 5 years. If they claim they can't, ask them where you can order those particular books. Wait about 3 more weeks, and then write to the HMRC again. This time you will ask them for a written and/or printed copy of your filings from the last five years. By asking for these items separately, you won't run into a "smart aleck" who wants to think for you. Otherwise, this results most times, in a delay by someone who wants to preempt what your desired result should be. This way you will be a success. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:31. The Lord daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. - Psalm 68:19. BEFORE you enter a home or building, quietly say "Peace Be To This House." - Luke 10:5. Those who are within those premises, must be of a peaceful demeanor. You will know why they are behaving in a favorable manner. Also, when you have a moment, read Psalm 35 (Plead My Cause). This is a request by you for God to watch over you and handle your business. He will take up your concerns about what is "known" and what is "unknown." You will be successful. I wish you well. Peace, Love and God Bless.

Well, assuming you submitted your returns on time, HMRC will have sent you a tax calculation showing how the tax due is made up. Look at that!
If you were late, and calculated your own tax incorrectly, ask them to check it.
(And why are you getting tax demands in April anyway?)
