There is a new online software program deductiontraq.net that does exactly what you are looking for. It can track charity easily. It gets fair market values from ebay. Also, you can store pictures, images of receipts for noncash donations. I have been using it for the last 7 months.

Set up a folder for the receipts for your donations that the charities give you when you make them. At the end of the year, add them up and list them on schedule A. You can only deduct them if you itemize. |

Keep your receipts! You have to have a receipt for all donations now, so it's pretty easy to comply with the law. Log them in a spreadsheet, put the receipts in a safe place, and you'll be good to go next year at filing time. |

First, you can only keep deduct charitable donations if you itemize your deductions.
As far as keeping track of it, just hold on to your receipts. |

If people "estimate" donations they are likely cheating. If you get audited you want to make sure you have documentation for any cash donations to back it up (statements, receipts or cancelled check copies). If you make non-cash donations you should keep a log of what you donated. |

File or the receipts by year and keep a seperate sheet in yearly file where you add all the estimates.
Example, if the last donation was in April and your balance was at say $3141 USD, and this month you made a donation for $144 USD file your receipt and on estimate sheet you have
-April 2008 ($3141.00)
-May 2008 ($3285.00) |
