Move in with your parents (or other). Don't make any money.

Don't earn any money and live off the land.

Since income is taxed and some kind of sales tax or a hidden tax is in anything, you cannot spend any money, so your only legal way to avoid tax is to receive NO income and spend NO money.

Earn less than $8,950 in 2008. You'll still have to pay the Social Security and Medicare taxes though. If you move to NH, there won't be any sales tax or state income tax. Good luck surviving on that little, especially through a New England winter.

You can always filter it through a corporation to avoid paying payroll tax, and you can also be a non profit. However, if you are for profit, the only way to pay no tax is to break even or less, or base your business in another country.

If you are an individual, there isnt much you can do.

Don't make any money, or make little enough that you don't owe any tax.

Contribute the maximum to your 401k account. You get matching employer money, you REDUCE your taxable income, and you build a nest egg for your retirement. Buying stock now while market is depressed is great if you're 15-20 years to retirement.
Establish and fund an traditional IRA.
Pay on your student loans.
Contribute to charities (if you itemize).
Pay alimony
Earn less than $8300 if single

Don't earn any money + Don't spend any money + Don't own any property
(income, sales, and property taxes are the primary taxes that we all pay)

Are you talking about avoiding tax altogether or just to minimize your tax bill?

To legally avoid paying tax altogether you need to have a combination of low enough income and/or high enough deductions so that your tax liablity is zero.

The good news, if your income is low enough the government gives you money via the EIC.

If you want to minimize your tax bill, become self employed. The tax code is designed to benefit the self employed.

Oh yeah, pay for quality tax planning advice.

You can't. Taxes are a necessary evil to maintain your rights in this country. You ought to be glad to pay your fair share. If you do not want to pay-move out. Try Nigeria!

You can open a non-profit, and settle all income to the management of that non-profit which can include a home from which the non-profit is managed, a vehicle for carrying out the duties of the non-profit, and other items for living which are used to carry out the duties expressed in the non-profit articles of incorporation... then sign up as a principle volunteer to carry out the main purpose of the organization and pay yourself nothing. The problem is, your house and possessions go with the organization... Or you can just become a minister.
