How can my husband get his ex wives social security number to file taxes.?
My husband and I went to get our taxes done and they said that he needs his ex wifes ssn to file and she refuses to give it to him. What can be done about this.
He can get a transcript of his old tax return free there is a form at IRS.gov

If he's paying alimony to her, he would need it. Did he ever file a joint return with her? It would be on that. If he has a copy, just look it up, otherwise request a transcript from the IRS.

Why does he need his ex's SSN to file? When did he get divorced from her? And when did you and he get married?
Unless he divorced her in 2008, his ex has nothing to do with his 2007 tax return. If his divorce became final on 12/31/2007 or earlier his filing status for 2007 would be Single (or possibly Head of Household in some cases) and there would be NO need for her SSN to file his 2007 tax return.
If he DID get divorced in 2008, her SSN will be on any prior returns he filed while married to her. He can order copies of prior year returns from the IRS for $39.00 or get a transcript for free if he didn't keep copies of the returns.
His divorce lawyer should also have her SSN.

Can he look at previous tax records? Could he contact the person that did his and the ex-wifes taxes and get the number from them? Other than that, I don't know what to tell him.

Look at his previous year's return. Surely he kept those?

Call the local Sherrif's Department and see if they can help. It should be on any previous tax returns from when they were married if filed jointly. I'm sure if the IRS requires it from you then she is required by law to give it to you, might be a good idea to also get the IRS involved they probably have a good answer for you. www.irs.gov is the website
