How can the government expect you to pay taxes when they never teach you how to pay taxes?
I mean, seriously?

The system is one of self-assessment, so theoretically every person should be able to request the relevant publications from the IRS and work out how to pay taxes. Despite the other answers on this thread, in many areas of taxation this is far harder than it sounds. Depreciation or non-resident alien taxation is almost impenetrable from the publications. I would be surprised if those who decided to insult you with their answers really know as much about the tax code as they think they do.

It is a difficult system, but the government really have no way of teaching you other than making the information readily available - which they do.

The misfortune is that our tax system one is a political one, rather than solely used for revenue, and that has resulted in the minefield of a system we have today.

Many do not file only because of this reason and get into problems with IRS.
Filing income tax return (and knowledge about other taxes) should be compulsory subject in high school.

What do you want them to do, send someone to your home to hold your hand? Info is very available, software is available for purchase to help you with your taxes, and there are plenty of people who do taxes if you don't want to tackle it yourself. If you are a senior or are low to low middle income, VITA and AARP/TCE programs provide tax preparation at no charge.

The government doesn't teach you to stop at red lights either but you are still expected to do so.

They expect, if you can hold a job, you have at least a room-temperature IQ to figure out how.

The government does not teach you how to breathe either.

The government also does not teach you how to stop at a red light, operate a parking meter, pass the test for a driver's license, brush your teeth, or do most other things that they expect you to do. They expect you to be an adult and either (a) learn some things on your own, (b) pay someone to do it for you, if you can afford to pay someone, or (c) if you cannot afford to pay someone, use one of the volunteer organizations that provide tax preparation assistance for low income individuals.

Because, that is the law. Plain and simple.

If you are old enough to work, you are old enough to know your responsibilities under the tax code.

Seriously, go to irs.gov and download the Instructions for form 1040EZ. That is probably all you need at this time. When you gow up, you will need the Instructions for form 1040.
