We live in southern NJ and we have the highest property taxes in the country. We live in an 1800 sf house that was built in 1924. Radiator heat and no central air. Our lot is about 30x60. The reason I tell you this is because our property taxes are $7200 a year and they go up every year. So before we even pay on our mortgage, the first $600 a month goes directly to taxes.
53% of our tax dollars goes to funding the schools. Not bad really, right? Our town is less than 2 square miles and we have no high school. We have 1 school for K-8 and the highschoolers get shipped out to other areas.
On the flip side, we enjoy many amenities. We have 7 full-time police officers, we have garbage p/u 3 times a week (regular, metals, paints, batteries on Wednesday and recyclables on Friday). We have leaf collection at the curb during the fall, snow plows, and the police actively drive the streets to ensure that the townspeople are safe and that the streets are safe.
Everything is more expensive. The tax dollars also pay for road repairs and maintenance, fire departments and police departments.
Your property tax also typcially goes up if you have any home improvements where you had to have an inspection done.
If you feel that your property taxes are too high, go to court and fight it. Ask for a re-evaluation and tell them why you feel that your taxes are too high. |

I totally agree with you - this happened to us this summer. I tried appealing with the assessor's office, but got a form rejection letter. Our house is worth at least 20% less than what we paid - it is unfair and should be illegal to raise the property taxes on it. You can try the assessor's office - maybe you will have more luck than we did. Best of luck! |

You think the government cares about your problems? lol. How are they supposed to give money to the big corporations if they dont raise your property tax. |

You county assessor figures the values all the properties in your county each year. These figures come from past home sales, size of property, condition of property, amount of land your home sets on. I'm sure there are other factors as well. If you do any major improvements on your home, you are supposed to have this assessed and that can increase your property tax. If a levy is voted on in a county election, they can generated the money to support that levy by increasing your property tax. I'm sure there are other reasons property tax increases but these are the ones I'm sure of. |

Because this way they have control over you. After all they own your house not you. THink I'm wrong? Don't pay your taxes and see how fast they take your house from you.
This is called communism and an act of where you have to do what they say and they keep you as poor as possible so that you are reliant on them. So yes they can do it and that is why. You see America has voted freedom out and communism in.
But just wait it will get a lot worse once Obama takes his seat. |

Property taxes are based on the value of the property and the tax rate in your area. If you think the value is overstated, contact your assessor and ask for a reappraisal. |
