How can you survive with the state pension in the u.k ?am i correct to think it is as much as i thin ?
I read that the state pension is 70£ per month.. how can someone survive with that money ??how do the older ppl in the uk survive.. i mean if u earn 19.000 / annum ..is hard to get a mortgae and a house and if u dont have private pension and u reach 65 what are you supposed to do .... i might be wrong but e.g in greece u getting paid only a bit less of what u use to earn so you dont have to struggle as much .. it must be a joke paying someone £70/ month ..,it seems it will be 130 : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6194332.stm when you get 60 you shouldnt have to worry about what will happen in 5 years but you should have peace of mind that you can retire confortably ... i think we should cut the benefits for ppl that they dont deserver them and take care of the elderly what do you think???
Additional Details
Sorry i meant 70£ per week .. but still nothing really ...even £130 week is nothing... i understand that you needs are less.. however you should have the change to do things that you couldnt do while working .. e.g affort to travel abroad for a long time and be able to affort it.. it seems to me that you have to work all your life for nothing ..and then the goverment is telling you: ok you were working all your life now you are 65 but you cant to anything .. just stay on the couch and watch some tv or something :-)

Surprising!!!

I agree rather look after the old people and little children who cannot look after themselves than all these young, fit people that ride on all the taxpayers backs. Im not Brittish but have been to england and have seen all these young people boasting that they are on the doll. I have worked in spain at a resort where Brittish people go to on vacation on their doll money ............... i mean that is quite ridiculous. That is why so many foreigners flock to the Uk for citizenship ............. nice country the government pays you if you are unemployed.

It's not 70 a month! It's more like 70 a week! Plus they get benefits like help with heating and taxes...also free travel...they do struggle though...they should have more.

Your state pension, whatever the amount, is topped up through pension credit to £120 per week and you do not have to pay council tax. If you are in rented property, which I am not, you get help with that as well.

It is not a fortune but I find that as I get older my needs and wants are few. I am very contented with it. I also get the lower disability allowance as well and can manage quite adequately.

We also get £200 per year towards our heating costs.

starlet108
Its £70 per week - NOT per month and help with cost of rent & COuncil tax if you have no savings or other income. It is very low but possible to live on - JUST. xx

Basic State Pension is £87-30 per WEEK for a single person.

Thought the UK took better care of the pensioners. In the US it's bare survival plus the medical is very poor. It boils down you keep working until you drop.

SCHUMIGIRL1956
the state pension in the U.K is £180 for married couples, per week thats why our goverment suggests doing a private pension set up before you retire, i have to make this last its a struggle but i am happy thats all that counts and i dont waste it on gambling, smoking and drink and drugs.

racey-pacey
The idea of working for 40 - 50 years is to save a bit, pay your way, then the pension with your savings is adequate to live on. With the £200 which is for winter fuel you can, at least, keep warm! The state pension could always be a bit more but because of the state of the country we'll have to put up with it. You are means tested and get help with rent and c/tax.

well instead of them wasting their money on beer and fags when they are working, why dont they save money for their old age?
I am sick of looking after idiots who dont look after themselves

I am currently surviving on £97.65 per week bereavement benefit and am told soon I will have to go on Jobseekers which is £65 per week, this will hardly cover my fuel bills etc. I have worked most of my life, paid my contributions and now I cannot afford the car tax, bus fares, new glasses, dentists, etc. On £65 per week I will barely be able to afford any food. If I had been idle all my life I would now get Income Related Jobseekers with all the perks (free health etc) that go with it.Where is the incentive to try in this country.

This country is a joke... I am 31, married with 2 kids and just embarking on the rollercoaster of self employment. I went onto JSA after Maternity Allowance and was only entitled to 6mths money although we've made NI contributions for years. Even as a cpl paying £2.50 each pw for 25yrs that only equals £6500 that isn't a lot to live on for potentially another 20yrs. So what if you get housing and council tax benefit... we lose on average a wk's wages per month on tax and NI contributions. Big deal you get £200 per yr on heating... how much is it to heat a 4 bedroom house per year! So you have slogged your guts out to buy a house, going into negative equity through the recession, only to either have to sell it when retired because you can't live comfortably and go on a cpl of holidays etc. which u should be entitled to. OR to have to sell the home you worked hard for to pay for a small room in a retirement home. Whilst those who have rented get a free placement. Even with the pension credits, it doesn't make a massive difference. You need to get a private pension or invest your money in bonds or something so you have something to fall back on... easier said than done I know! What this person above was saying about ppl who smoke and drink... ppl dying of cancer and drink related health issues has not stopped the government from patting their pockets with the amount of money they make. We pay what £5-£6 per packet over here and go to Spain and can get the same for half the price. Smoking and drinking were around long before you and me. If you think about it, it is the government who are encouraging addiction and the health issues this country has. They're not going to cut-off the workshy parasites in this country just because they haven't paid their NI contributions. It would be against their human rights, so they will remain happy to know they'll always have a roof over their shoulders and various benefits. I think there needs to be more education about pensions and that its importance should be taught before the age you can legally leave education. xj
