zemoman | How come I end up owing the Gov more than $1600 in taxes, is not fair? |
I make 40,000 a year
I won 3000
I had 2100 in medical exp
I paid 400 to donations
I had business exp of 400,
and now I have to pay $409 state, and $1300 federal, nothing make sense anymore.
If I put more money in the 401K plan, let's say 40% of my income, can I save more money on taxes? can I get money back next year when I do my taxes? what other ways can I save on taxes and end up getting money back????
I know I have a lot of questions, I just can't help it, I'm really pissed guys....
Help me out. |

It appears that you will not be able to itemize with the information you supplied, so the medical expenses and donations do not help you. The average taxpayer that itemizes has mortgage interest to help them get above the standard. Also, even if you were able to itemize your medical would still not count as it would not meet the AGI floor requirement based on your info. You would only be able to deduct anything over about 3200 in medical expenses. As far as the 401k you would definitely pay less tax if you max out your contributions.... if it is pretax contributions. The tax would be collected when you cash in the 401 k later down the road. One thing you could do to minimize your taxes for 2007 is make contributions to an IRA in 2008. This is the only deduction you can take in this year that will benefit last years taxes. Finally, its not about getting money back. You should strive to pay all of the tax owed through estimated payments or witholding through an employer. If anything you would rather write a check for a small amount to the IRS at the end of the year instead of them writing you one. Dont give them the interest free loan....they will not do it for you. |

I doubt if you're having enough taken out of your payroll for federal taxes, decrease your exemption number or go with 0.
PS We always have to pay the state, even when we were state employees. This year we are getting a hunk back from federal and still owe state. |

Apparently you didn't fill out your W-4 properly, and didn't have enough taken out through the year. Some of the problem was that $3000 win, if you didn't have tax taken out of it or didn't have enough taken out.
You don't have anywhere near enough in deductions to itemize, so will take the standard deduction.
Check on what is on your W-4, and change it so you get enough taken out.
If you put money into a 401K, then yes, that will decrease your taxable income so will decrease your total tax. But your withholding would also be smaller, so if you don't fix your W-4, you'd probably owe again next year. |

Try asking your boss to withhold more. Thing is taxation is bracketed. I have around the same income and used to be considered self employed. That was a *****, ended up owing like 7k one year.
The winnings probably did you in. I think its like 40% on winnings but im not sure about those numbers.
Only 2900 in writeoffs. I usually include tuition when it applies and anythign that relates to work.
I would assume that there is a cap on 401k writeoffs.
Taxes are unavoidable and so are teh expenses just plan for them and count on the gov taking about 35-40% every year.
Look into your witholding amount and put aside any moer you think will be needed. Buy like a short term CD or soemthing relatively secure and invest the money untill april.
That or have like 10 kids. |

Did you not have any tax withheld from your pay? How many are you claiming on your W-4.
(you should of at least have $6, 600.oo withheld during the year).
Contact your congressman to make changes on the federal taxes. |
