babie_boomah | How come "chain" tax preparers charge so much for filing electronically? |
I mean, it's just a FAX. Dial and hit send. My accountant doesn't charge any extra for doing this, but people I know that have their taxes done by "chain" preparers say they are charged anywhere from $25 - $100 for this service. What's the big deal? And even id there is a charge, shouldn't it be standardized? Why such variation? |

You are basically paying for a name brand, which is really all it is. Did you know that Jackson Hewitt and H&R block have both been involved in scandals regarding their clients or themselves..
For instance.... H&R block did accurately do their own corporate income taxes..
Jackson Hewitt had some rogue employees who were committing fraud to get people higher refunds (of course this meant they could charge more)
In addition, most tax preparers are charging you for liability protection.. If something happens, most tax preparers have to be ready to stand by their client. Let's say they did your taxes incorrectly. While you could be forced to pay for their mistakes, the IRS can also penalize them OR possibly make them cover the loss if it is determined they exercised willful disregard.. Do not believe the misconception about these big companies.. Many of the preparers are not trained as well as a CPA who specializes in tax. These preparers make $7-10 an hour AND take a class taught by the company (which is just a quick breeze thru of common tax laws)..
As someone who has taken the income tax classes and working on CPA, I would recommend them over anyone else.. One other thing.. You can read up many of these items on your own.. No big deal.. I have done my taxes for nearly 15 years..
Hope that helps..
***One other thing*** Do not buy the arguments from those who state.. it costs money to fax documents or e-mail them.. Technology has evolved enough to where the cost of transmission is VERY LOW if non existent (unlimited long distance plans for business offered)... These people charge high prices because you are receiving money back.. The easiest way to get money out of people is when they are depending on a tax preparer to facilitate getting the most back..*** |

They do it because they can and get people to pay for it. What I do not understand is why people do rapid for a cost of $300-way up. If you need money so badly then giving away 6 or 7 hundred doesn't sound too financially sensible. |

They charge it because they can. They charge whatever they think people will be willing to pay.
It isn't even a fax - it's a computer to computer hookup over a phone line or the Internet. |

Because people are willing to pay that much. If they didn't, then they wouldn't charge that much. |

My aunt works for a well-know chain tax preparation service. So I know a few things from her.
FAXing forms isn't free, its a long-distance phone call, billed on time. It may take quite a while to send forms, especially if the receiving FAX is backed up. Most people have their federal and state taxes done. The average number of pages for the Fed is 6 and state is 4. That's 10 pages on average. My aunt charges $10 a page, so that's $100 to send the average forms. Of course, there are the unscrupulous preparers who say they will file electronically, then just mail it in and pocket the difference. KNOW WHO YOU'RE DEALING WITH and their credibility. Shop around for tax prep service.
This just came up on Yahoo:

The short answer is because most people do not know how easy it is.
Also, the majority of people and small businesses do not have personal accountants. Chains pay a large amount to have "one-size-fits-all" software that they can send to the masses and charge a larger amount. For many, it is worth the accessibility, and because consumers are willing to pay for it, the chain companies can charge it. |

Our world is a corporate one that is very greedy by nature. If they can charge extra and people will pay, they will charge extra. That's how our capitalistic society works. |

Often "commercial" tax preps lure customers by promising a low fee for filing electronically, then invariably find a reason to charge quite a bit more like, "Well, that fee was just for Federal, the stare taxes weren't included." or "You had more forms than the average person."
Go figure, literally. |
